Maidenhead FC

You have to take your hat off to Peter Griffin and others, who have got under way the building of their £320,000 grandstand at Maidenhead FC .

Although it does piss me off somewhat, that a club so near, that was traditionally smaller than Slough, have overtaken us by having their own ground and playing in a higher league.

Still, mustn't be too disheartened as our club are beginning to rise again..........

Depends what you mean by tradition. I would have said that when I first started watching Slough in the late 50's the two clubs' records were broadly similar, with Maidenhead maybe having had the edge. They certainly had the better of things after the manager/players swap in the summer of 1959. That situation continued until the mid 60's but then respective fortunes altered considerably, with Slough significantly in the ascendant until at least the summer of 1998 and maybe a bit beyond. I don't think anyone quite appreciated the significance of their owning their own ground until quite recently, or least until we lost control of ours. I would imagine/hope that their supporters are as grateful to their current owners for backing them as we are to Mr Easterbrook and the others you mentioned on a separate thread.

Yes in those far off days my dad reckons Maidenhead were our equals until we took their best players mid 60's, though we left them a giant in play and loyalty a chap called Brian Pitt who was a commanding centre back,we had Delaney,Hatt and Scott at the time so did not need him lol.Apparantly we had very good crowds for the local derbies home and away

Of course our own ground and club house would make all the difference.

I bow to your superior knowledge,in the fact that you are older than me.I didn't realise they were a bigger club in the 50's.

I wasn't born until 1963 !

Until recently,I've always seen Maidenhead as a smaller club than Slough due to the size of the town, support and the honours won/level of football played at.

Wasn't trying to pick a fight.

Told by my uncle that in 1930's there was a scandal which led to the Slough first team being declared professionals. Apparently the inquiry was headed by or included a senior Maidenhead official. LOL as they say today. But what lino says about Brian Pitts is spot on. Big hearted, giant of a man who always gave 100% for his team.

Being pedantic, are we talking about Maidenhead United FC?  I always prefer proper names for clubs, as otherwise insults any junior clubs with Maidenhead in their names.

Definitely remember MUFC as the bigger club, as lads we used to get the train to Maidenhead to watch them (when Slough were away!). Big crowds there in those days and of course Brian Pitts.

Maidenhead acquired floodlights some years before Slough and staged attractive friendlies in addition to league matches. I recall seeing a fledgling Bob Wilson playing in goal for Loughborough Colleges in one such game. The Magpies usually wore shiny, generous-fitting, white shirts for their evening games, which added to the spectacle and made Terry Wise and Dennis Way look even faster as they sped down either wing.  Our Farnham Road based contingent used to get there and back on the bus.
