Slough's former homes

Slough moved about a bit in the past but the details from various histories are a bit sketchy. When did the club return to the Dolphin Stadium from Belfast Avenue? Immediately after its 'demerger' with Centre? Why was it allowed to go back the Dolphin after being evicted before the war? Was Wexham Park built for the club or did it exist prior to the move there in 1973?

All info gratefully received.

Certainly Slough Historian Alan Smith or John Tebbit would know.

In the chapter on Slough Centre in his book "More Defunct FC" Dave Twydell says that the need to undertake remedial work on the Centre Stadium pitch meant that the then Slough United started season 1946/47 playing at the Dolphin and that in the autumn it was decided to continue to stage 1st team matches there, with the reserves playing at Belfast Avenue. This seems ultimately to have led to the split. A reformed Slough Centre club was admitted to the Western Division of the Spartan League for season 1947/48 and went on to achieve promotion to the Premier Division in its first season.

I think that I can recall Slough Town playing two matches at the Centre Stadium in the early/mid 1960's.

Wexham Park was built for Slough, and by the Supporters and Board.

the problems being that there were two councils involved with the planning, slough borough and south bucks, also there was a proviso that only ball sports could take place on the land and anything associated with ball sports , if this were to stop then the land had to return to green belt, a problem i think the present owner is having to deal with.

Strangely, most/all of the detailed maps I have seen, including those on Slough Council's website, show Wexham Park as being wholly within South Bucks, with the district boundaries following the pattern of the made-up roads. I had always understood that the site was divided  between the two authorities, a situation that made life difficult for both Mr Thorne and Mr Deaner. Is that still the situation?

Hi Dave, situation is that SBC owned the freehold, but the land was in South Bucks area, so the former had no control over planning.

There's a footpath that runs immediately to the south of WP, which constitutes the northern border of SBC area (used to walk the dog there back in the day).

I know this is slightly off topic,to say the least, but IF we ever get a new stadium ?!.......

I hope that people like Martin Deaner,Alan Thorne [not Byron! ],Steve Easterbrook [people who have funded the club through dark days] get some form of recognition on the new building,as homage to all the efforts they have done to keep the club alive, when others were found wanting.

Seems that "Bernie Gogan" has penetrated my less than skilfully disguised profile. Now wondering if his initials are KH.
