Retained Players

Recommended Posts

Noticing that some clubs are publishing lists of released/retained players, I assume from what was said last Friday that it is the intention at our club to retain the whole squad for next season...unless there are situations where financial issues get in the way ?

No disrespect to godalming but I think the players left because Neil and Jon were coming to slough! Not saying this is correct just from what I've heard they are loyal to the managers. The managers brought them in and have great trust in them and I think they respect the managers

The whole squad deserve their chance to see if they can cut it in the Premier division, after their superb efforts of the now past season but if Bakes and Unders want to strengthen with a few new players, there's bound to be a couple leaving or going out on loan or being dual registered.

It's strange for the Slough fans as we're not used to promotion ! For years we were going the other way until Steve Bateman to his credit, stabilised us somewhat.

Who knows what to expect of our team in a higher level of football?

Regardless of Neil's assertions that Slough have the experience to measure up against most of the teams in the Southern Premier. It's unknown what will happen.

I think it will be a learning curve for all of us; players, management and fans.

When I think back to the Slough team that won the Isthmian league title, all those years ago, to gain promotion to the then Vauxhall Conference, they had wiped the floor with most of their Isthmian opponents and looked like a team that could hold their own against anyone in the Conference [very much like the current Slough team going into the Premier].The difference between then and now, is back then they finished in 1st place and as Champions, where we're going in as a 5th placed team.

In the first season in the Conference, Slough got off to a home win in our first game but then was brought crashing down to earth by receiving a 6-1 thrashing away to Barnet. The season turned out to be an enjoyable one, with plenty of new grounds to visit but certainly a rocky road,in the manner of games we won and lost but at least we survived, for a second season in the Conference.

This coming season, the Southern Premier should provide plenty of thrills and spills

.As much as I would love to see Slough ascend quickly to the upper reaches of the table, I'm expecting a lot harder climb, with a number of our players falling by the wayside,on the journey to cement Slough as one of the better teams in this division.

This isn't going to take one season, to make happen.

However, I do think we will definitely surprise a few sides by the enterprising football we play, with the current crop of players we have and hopefully,we will do ourselves justice at this new level.

Can't wait for it to start.

There won't be a huge amount of news for you this summer!!! Hopefully it will be a lot less stressful than last year, and we can look forward to pre season with a few new additions:

We still have our end of season tour to Portugal which is taking place mid June, and at last count I think we had 19 of us going... I think that tells you how close this group is!

Does that mean Neil,or Jon,that we fans are unlikely to hear any news on new players joining, until after the jolly-up in Portugal?

No it doesn't, we hope to be able to announce some good news before then!

We will be looking to provide an update next week, possibly via a Rebels Radio interview and through the official website.

Great post, couldnt agree more.

I think, after a number of season's with the target set as promotion, it will feel odd (well for me personally) to think, lets just finish 5th from bottom upwards.

Feels odd, probably going from one of the favourites for promotion to ..... well ....... not favourites (don't want to say that R word).

Regarding that Barnet game, I was there that night. We did score the best goal of the game, a Barry Rake lob from about 30 / 40 yards out.

From last seasons squad we have quite a few players who have had experience in the premier division, so with a few 'quality additions' IMO any thoughts of relegation is out of the question.

Some people might be content with just surviving but IMO, at the very least, we can be a top half team.

It's also refreshing hear that Bakes and Unders will not be content with just 'consolidation' but want to push on and get us into the 'Conference' as quick as possible.

Rebel Matt and Brighton Rebel,I was at Barnet, too. Certainly brought us down with a bump, that night.Think it was Andy Clarke that destroyed Slough most.He was a handful at the best times and it was obvious,he was going to be a professional, sooner than later, back then.

Reading Rebel,I can see why Bakes and Unders are optimistic about our chances in the Prem and I think they are right to think positive and to keep the squad together to start with.

The unity and spirit is second to none in the squad, and will be well worth having, especially if things don't go to plan but I really feel it's hard to know what will happen.

Looking at the teams we face in the division,it certainly doesn't look like it will be plain sailing!

I'm  hoping that our budget is a healthy one,as reinforcements may be needed throughout the season.

In the Slough Express,an article mentions the possibility of a new defender and a new midfielder joining.I hope our budget can stretch for another striker, too. My personal preference would be have the option of a tall, powerful robust player up front for the variation of play but of course our managers may have very different ideas.

In terms of potential new additions to the squad bear in mind that until forms can be signed no players are guaranteed.

Whether a player commits to a club or actually signs a form there are never any guarantees.

I have absolutely no problem with this because we should only want players at Slough who are totally committed to playing for the club and not do a runner as soon as another club makes an approach.

New central defender to replace Dave Woozley?

I know he was forced into playing more games than he planned last season due to Adam Foulser's injury.

I think another central mid-fielder to complement our existing ones is a must.

Another striker?

I see your point on a big, powerful striker as we will certainly come up against more bigger non nonsense defenders next season.
