Customers wearing clothing by designer label Burberry are being barred from pubs and nightclubs.

A respectable married woman became a victim of this fashion edict after she was refused entry to a bar because she was carrying an umbrella and a handbag from the store.

She was turned away from Aberdeen's Filling Station bar and doormen say around 80 per cent of the city's venues have put the label on their barred list.

The distinctive check pattern, often seen as a sign of sophistication and class has now become associated for some with yobbish behaviour, particularly football hooliganism.

Soccer thugs, who have for long been renowned for their love of expensive clothes, have adopted Burberry as their unofficial uniform.

Yesterday the woman turned away in Aberdeen, who did not want to be named, said she was furious " I was wearing my best clothes " she said.

Convicted football thug, Stephen Holden, who wears a Burberry cap, was one of the first fans to be banned from attending England matches at home or abroad in Setember 2000 under new anti-hooligan legislation
