KINGSTONIAN  0  HORNCHURCH  1

Although Hornchurch had the first attacking move of the evening, when Tambeson Eyong and George Purcell combined to set up Chris Bourne, who pulled his shot wide of the post, it was the home side who had the majority of the territorial play in the first half.

Steve Laidler hit a long range shot just wide of the post, and Andre McCollin rounded Phil Starkey on the right before sending the ball across the goalmouth, where there was no one to apply the final touch.

Eyong made a lengthy solo run along the wing, then cut inside, leaving the defender trailing, but his shot, under pressure, went wide of the post.

Kingstonian had a good chance after Chris Bourne conceded a free kick, and Laidler hit the ball over the ball but narrowly wide of the goal, and Daniel Pappoe sent a shot wide shortly afterwards, whilst an Andre McCollin free kick hit the stanchion behind the goal.

Daniel Sweeney, who had been prominent in the early Kingstonian forages, was then replaced by Charles Ofusu-Hene, and Eyong made an excellent tackle to deny Ryan Moss.

Stefan Payne was shown a yellow card after needlessly handling the ball, and thereafter was a target for the home side, giving Hornchurch a few worrying moments when he was twice spoken to by the referee before being substituted for Leigh Bremner, following an incident involving Josh Casey when Hornchurch were awarded a free kick, possibly to prevent what seemed to be an inevitable red card.

K’s again went close with a Laidler free kick conceded by Purcell who was helping out in defence, and McCollin again fired a shot wide. Aaron Goode made a penetrating run on the right and his centre was headed over the bar as the pressure intensified.

K’s had another free kick when Eyong was booked for a tackle, the ball coming back off the defensive wall.

Hornchurch came back as the half drew to a close, and keeper Rob Tolfrey did well to hold a cross from Bourne, whilst the best opening was created by Eyong, who again left defenders trailing with a run which started close to the half way line and which ended with the ball running out of play as Tam tried to get in his cross whilst avoiding two defenders.

As the match went into stoppage time, Frankie Curley was unfortunate to be shown a yellow card after making an excellent tackle in midfield.

After the somewhat torrid first half, Hornchurch began powerfully after half time when Bremner sent over a good centre which the home side scrambled clear, but Hornchurch took the lead on 56 minutes when RICKIE HAYLES headed home a Joey May corner.

Two minutes later Laidler was booked for a foul on Eyong, and Hornchurch then lost Elliot Styles with an injury, and he was replaced by Michael Spencer.

Starkey played a long ball through to Purcell, whose shot was wide of the post, and at the other end Charlie Knight sent over a good cross to Laidler who directed his shot too high and over the bar.

Purcell hammered a free kick wide of the wall of defenders but also wide of the post, and Inigo Echepare then made an excellent diving save when a May slip had given the Dee Okoji a clear run at goal.

Hornchurch forced two corners in quick succession, whilst Inigo rose well to hold a K’s corner, before Billy Coyne came on for Joey May.

A Bremner run led to two more Hornchurch corners, the last of which drifted out and into the side netting, and a third corner was held by Tolfrey.

After Coyne had headed clear from a Knight corner, Hornchurch almost added a second goal when Rickie Hayles headed a Bourne free kick against the post.

There was five minutes of stoppage time and the best K’s could manage was another corner which Coyne headed away, and a Dave Rainford tackle on Ryan Moss who was in a shooting position.
