Chertsey Town

They are already relegated. I suppose this just means they won't accept a reprieve if offered which is perfectly reasonable. Ashford Town refused a reprieve from the Isthmian Premier Division a couple of seasons ago. I wonder if this means Ashford may be offered a reprieve instead and what they'll do this time....

This seasons rules mean no reprieve will be offered to the bottom Club, so if Ashford finish bottom they'll both be down, along with Guildford City (who according to their manager will win the League next season if he keeps his squad together ;) ).

Come on GF, this is an FA rule we're talking about. You know they write things so vaguely that things are left open to interpretation.

Yes, the bottom team will be relegated, but what do they consider to be the bottom team? You'd think it's be the team at the bottom after all the games have been played but, according to the Northern Premier League, that's not necessarily how it works.

Quote: "Following a meeting of the NPL board on Sunday 13th April a letter from Cammell Laird Football Club requesting that they be relegated to Step 6 of the NLS at the end of the 2013-2014 season was accepted.

A letter from Wakefield FC requesting that they be relegated to Step 5 of the NLS at the end of season 2013-2014 season was also accepted.

The League would treat both clubs as filling the two relegation places (21st and 22nd) in the NPL Division One North at the end of season 2013-2014 in accordance with FA regulations."

If the Southern League do the same and decide to class Chertsey as the bottom club, even if they finish above Ashford, that COULD give Ashford a lifeline if they want it.

They have resigned from step 4 end of

Is it end of? If you resign after March 31st your league can, if they wish, fine you. I hope the Southern League don't do that to Chertsey but there's no point resigning if you're already guaranteed to finish in a relegation position.

To do so wouldn't they have to expunge Chertsey's record - which in turn may affect other Clubs?. Mind you if Chertsey lose to Slough on Saturday and Ashford gain a point at Aylesbury then Ashford would likely be due a reprieve in any event?

The NPL statement did throw a spanner in the works... the team "deemed" to be bottom might be classified as such because they resigned, expunging a record isn't required.  This happened in the Central Division a couple of years ago when Atherstone resigned well before the end of the season, then finished second bottom anyway but were deemed to have finished last because, having resigned, they were then ineligible for a reprieve.

The FA said some time ago they wouldn't reprieve clubs that finished last in the table but have now been contradicted by the NPL's statement.  When Ashford were offered a reprieve in 2010, it came so late that it was conditional on going into the Southern League Premier Division, which at that time would have been financial suicide. This is an entirely different scenario.

GF is right that if we get a point more than Chertsey do on Saturday, we would be in line for any within-division reprieve.

IMHO, teams should only be reprieved if there isn't a 2nd placed team below their league, ie in a promotion position, willing to promote.

Chertsey can do what suits them best Financially, like resign from the Calor one central. However teams like Croydon/Wembley/ HAVE NO CHOICE if they are moved to other Leagues by the F.A.is that perfectly reasonable?

Given that both Step 4 divisions of the Southern League now have Clubs that have resigned (Thatcham & Chertsey), will the "in-house" reprieve necessary as a result of Hinkley going bust not now be offered to the "relegated" Club with the best ppg - i.e. Guildford City? I doubt they'd accept it though unless swapped back to a more "local" Step 4 league.

They resigned before 31march but did not tell anyone according to the managers report in the papers not even the players knew

This just shows the sign of the times, non-league football is becoming too expensive for a variety of reasons and the commitment required when jumping from Step 5 to Step 4 appears to some to be too big a jump.  In the CCL it is very rare you need to take the afternoon of work to attend a midweek game, but a common occurance in the Southern League.  It also shows, as I think we all know, that the sugar daddy is all very well until they get bored.  Would Chertsey have applied for promotion if they had known that Spencer was not going to stick around (not digging at Spencer for wanting to try his hand higher up, or Chertsey as you can never know one week to the next what happens in football if anyone tries to accuse me of doing so)?

It is well known that the non-league pyramid needs a radical overhaul but unfortunately I cannot ever see it happening.
