Best eleven players you have watched?

Am I dreaming this but seem to have thought you did put your best 11 up? as Martin Rowlands was in your team, wasn't he?

I might be cracking up and delusional ! ha ha!

Loved Sammy Winston; he had that great tactic of hanging in front of the last man, having a teammate knock it low and hard to feet, where he quickly flicked the ball around the left side of his opponent before peeling away around the right side of the opponent and more often than not, his pace saw him get to the ball and either a good chance, goal or red-card tackle would ensue.

Didn't see too much of Corey Browne, but heard he was somewhat of a luxury player? Was it just a rumour that he won the National Lottery at some point?

I'm not going mad after all ! Yes I remember your team now.

Dave Harlow what a class act he was.He nearly made my set of players.I plumped for Dave Carroll of Wycombe with Ian Hazel of Slough as back up,mainly because I had seen them a lot more than Dave Harlow.

Of the games I saw Dave Harlow in,he always looked like he had time on the ball and assured in midfield.Never flustered.Made central midfield look easy, when we know it is one of the hardest positions to play in.

Simon Read I remember well,he was a prolific goal scorer and at the time, everyone knew he was one of the best strikers around. I opted for Mark West for the same reason as above but also when he was at Wycombe in such a good team [pains me to say!] he was superb. He was brilliant at turning his marker and firing a shot off, which usually got buried in the net.

Talking of Mark West, being that he's the manager of Thame and has a loose association with Slough, and that the Thame pitch and ground are excellent, wouldn't that be good for a friendly?

Bakes and I played alongside Westy at Farnborough at the end of his career and he was still class then. Was very close to being in my 'dream team'!

I know Bakes spoke to him a few weeks ago about a friendly but unfortunately their pitch will not be ready for the one date we had free to play them. Hopefully we can play them next summer though if Westy is still there as it is a great set-up over there.

Towards the end of his stint with Slough,Sammy had lost his pace and got frustrated that he couldn't get past opposition players like he had done easily in the past,so started to get pulled up for fouling etc. Shame to see,as he had been a great striker and terrorised defences in the past.

In his prime, one of the best strikers around.

Lucky Corey if he won the lottery! It's funny when people say luxury players.I think it all depends on the manager on how he wants the team to operate.

To me,if you have a maestro that is ultra-talented ie Glenn Hoddle,George Best,Paul Gascoigne or in the non-league scene,a Lee Endersby,a Steve Thompson,a Dean Clark or a Veli Hakki or a Warren Harris, you have the chance of building the team around them but often many managers and I suppose, fans, are not patient enough to do this.

In the manager's case often they are fixated in every player defending.Having said all that, sometimes doesn't matter how good a player is,if the rest of team doesn't work well with him, there's not much you can do!

Also talented players don't always share the work ethic/workload of the others and so can create disharmony in the camp.

3spirit, not sure if it's what you meant to say but I certainly wouldn't call Warren Harris a 'luxury player'.

IMO does more than his fair share of the 'Donkey Work'.

No I didn't mean he was a luxury player.I was trying to get across the point about talented players.Used Warren Harris as an example as he's a current player and I don't view him as just a winger.

We don't have any luxury players currently,as Bakes and Unders have a work ethic and know the type of player that fits into the pattern of play that they want the Slough side to play like.

Suppose our last one was Ollie Burgess.Though he was not necessarily an archetypal one,at that.

It is hard to define what a luxury player is ! Some people see certain players as a luxury, some people see them as extremely gifted.

3spirit,

My definition of a luxury player:

A player who is naturally gifted. On his day, with the ball at his feet and given the right service, will be the best player on the park and a match winner.

On another day, when he does not receive the right service, will not battle or do any graft to get himself into the game but instead will just sulk and disappear up his own a*se and become a liability to the team.

IMO we had one of those till march time .....

Agree there,Radders.

Reading Rebel, understand your definition and agree with it 95% of the time  but on the odd occasion you get a supremely gifted player whose natural game gets wasted because the manager and his tactics in playing him are at fault because they don't know how to get the best from him,or how to play the said player in his most effective position or even risk him in a free role.

Can't disagree with that 3spirit.
