Best eleven players you have watched?

Neil Baker

3Spirit got me thinking, what is everyone's best eleven they have seen either playing for Slough or against them, or even in any other non league game:

Only rules are the they have to be players that have played non league football (however they could have gone on to professional football).

I will need to think on this one....

When I started watching Slough regularly the one player who always stood out for me and looked like he should be playing a higher level was Veli Hakki.

I'm not saying he's the best non league player ever or the best Rebels player ever but he was the one who consistently looked like he had time and space that others didn't - the sign of a good player. Obviously his career went slightly downhill for non-footballing reasons (or at least non-playing reasons) but before that he was superb.

I'll also throw in Tony Boot as the best penalty taker I have ever seen at any level of football, including what youngsters would now call the premier league. Over to your, 3spirit, to completely disagree ;-)

Remember playing against both of those Ian... have to say that Veli was always one of those players that when you played against you hated, as he had that real nasty streak to him... but I can't disagree that he was a good player, and the combination of Boot and Hodges was one of the hardest I had to deal with (when playing Slough), lethal partnership they had, think that was when you were playing over at Windsor.

A couple of names that spring to mind..

Steve Thompson will always be first on my team sheet, quality player for us with a capital Q.

Chalkie White (maybe because Im biased because I know him).

Trevor Bunting, always safe hands.

Trevor Howe and Neil Stanley on my list.

Going back to when I was a kid, we used to have this wide man (balding, in a kind of Bobby Charlton kind of way). Mid 80s. The name Dodd keeps coming to mind....

Echo all of the above. Rowan Dodds was a big centre forward and my first footballing idol when I was about 7 or 8 yrs old. Also loved Tony Dell for his no nonsense tackling man was an animal. Tommo is still my favourite Slough player of all time.

Gary Patterson,an England semi-pro.Never got to see him I don't think? Liked Terry Skiverton when played for Yeovil and looked the part for a centre half. Matt Crossley, another more than useful defender.

Steve Guppy there's a name, went all the way with Martin O'Neil. Yes he was good but was somewhat surprised that he did,if I'm honest.

Barry Hayles was ace.Forgot about him and he's still playing! Scored for Arlesey Town on the Saturday just gone!

Don't remember Michael Mison, who did he play for?

Ian, I thought Veli Hakki was excellent. When he first arrived at Slough he was a revelation and was definitely a better footballer than people gave him credit. Shame injury and his personal life shattered his non-league career.

Ian Hodges was a great striker and any goal poacher could have played off of him.I think Danny Burnell would have profited,if they were of the same time period.

Tony Boot certainly did.

I was surprised by Tony Boot to be honest. Didn't think he would have the success that he has done, being that he is lightweight but he certainly knew how to put the ball in the net.

Started his career in midfield for Fulham FC was a decent player built a bit like Carlton Palmer also played for Sutton United FC.

Cheers Savagebee. Still can't recall him.

Michael Mison was an absolute unit for Rushden and Diamonds... I remember playing central midfield against him one day, and was the second hardest game of football I have ever played in.. he was quality.... the hardest being the day Barry Hayles killed me as a 17 year old when we lost 3-1 away at Stevenage and he got a hat trick...

My Dad always used to tell me Eric Young was the best player to come out of Slough Town. Anyone else got a view on this as he was a little before my time as a Slough player.

Best eleven made up of only players I've seen playing for Slough

Paul Wilkerson

Steve Whitby, Terry Angus, Gary McGinnis, Alex Haddow

Gareth Mccleary, Darron Wilkinson, Steve Thompson, Mark Fiore

Mark West and Gary Abbott

Subs: Trevor Bunting, Paul Hardyman, Ian Hazel, Lloyd Owusu and Ian Hodges

Should add that I've included those players because of their form whilst at Slough. I saw Kenny Sansom play for Slough and he has 80 odd England caps but suffice to say he wasn't at his best for the Rebels!
