5 ex- Slough players you couldn't see why they were rated so high

Dean Coney, when I saw his name, I thought immediately of QPR. I recollect having him on one of of pannini stickers, he played for QPR when they had the plastic pitch if memory serves me right.

Neil, who's boots did you clean at Southampton?

Well I never served my apprenticeship at Saints, just a schoolboy, however on a 2 week training camp at the Dell I had to clean a young Matt Robinson's boots....

Luckily when I was at Wycombe serving my apprenticeship, I had glandular fever at the start of the season, so missed a lot of pre season, so when I came back all the jobs had been given out for the boot cleaning, so never had anyone in particular to clean, which was a right touch.

Very different these days, the lads at academies, don't have to do any of the types of jobs we had to do as apprentices.

I watched quite a few of Yeading's games when he was there, too,as my nephew played for Yeading youth side.

Johnson Hippolyte,Steve Cordery,Hector Walsh,Steve Croad, Lee Charles and Charlie Oatway were there too.Even ex-Slough Town player Robbie Johnson turned out for them that year.I think?

Hector Welsh scored a good few goals for the Ding think he left them for Ruslip Manor FC.

Lee Charles went to QPR FC for a short spell think he ended up at Chertsey Town FC.

Charlie Oatway was a great little player Yeading FC were a great little team to watch in the early - mid 1990's.

You're so right !  Charlie went on to professional football, too. He had just come through the youth ranks into the first team back then.

Johnson Hippolyte and Steve Cordery were no mugs either!

No offence to Bakes and Unders but I thought Steve Cordery did a reasonable job at Staines Town as manager and I wouldn't have minded, if he had got the Slough job.

Of course,I'm so glad he didn't get it now ! ! ! Ha ha ha !

Just out of interest, anyone know Stevie Clemence (was at Arsenal as a youth player and played for England School boys at Wembley)?

Name rings a bell but can't put a finger on it, why.Maybe thinking of someone else. Was it definitely spelt Clemence or could it have been Clements.

Actually got a feeling Spurs had a young player called that.Probably who I'm thinking of.

No wonder we are not getting many characters coming through !

3spirit, 3spirit, 3spirit... I never said anything about any players, management or anyone else, and haven't for quite a while (on here)

I only asked that if you wanted a positive conversation, why did you start it off on a negative point of view, which you have answered.

There was no need for your extra remarks, and it's remarks like that, that made me stop posting anything about the team on here, even to say that the photos are ready for viewing.

Gary Dodd, late 80's centre mid. I couldn't see how he got a game.

How do I know, though,if my postings are going to upset people. I'm not a mindreader! I didn't set out with intent.

Funny you saying that because I thought he played well as a centre half for Slough.

I rated Dave Harlow big time.He looked effortless on the ball.Slough fans all know the assets of Darron Wilkinson and he would be in my fantasy non-league dream squad of 22 ! Think Hayes saw the peak of him, though.

Simon Read was a profilic goalscorer and was highly rated.I do remember him well.

Maik Taylor who went on to play professionally for Leicester and many others?

I had always admired Stuart McKenzie of ex Yeading and Farnborough as a solid, dependable goalkeeper .Didn't you play alongside him as well,Jon? Surprised David Leaworthy never made your team or was it that he wasn't around in your time.Hard to remember who played with whom.

Macca was a quality keeper and is a top top man and was only just pipped by Maik Taylor which says a lot for him considering what Maik went on to achieve at the top level.

I joined Farnborough the year after Leworthy moved on so never played with him in a competitive game although I think we played together briefly in a Farnborough v Aldershot 'legends' game (and I use the term loosely in my case, not his!) a few years later.

The only player I was extremely disappointed with was James Lambert, the former Reading player who joined us when Graham Roberts was manager? (memory is vague). Was pretty average and underwhelming from what I recall considering his pedigree.

I liked James Lambert.Unfortunately he was a pale shadow of the player that had turned out for Reading so successfully,by the time he got to Slough.

To my mind, thought the manager at time,Paul Hardyman or Steve Browne[ I think]? Didn't know where to play him to get the best out of him, I thought.

That's happened a lot,at different times, over the years to players. One that springs to mind is Lee Endersby.

Highly rated before he came to Slough and an England semi-pro. We got hold of him, played him out of position and wasted the skill he had, and most of the fans never took to him.

I've got another one for my list that Bakes and Unders probably know or know of.Highly rated at Farnborough, naff at Slough- Mark Turkington.
