HORNCHURCH  2  HAMPTON & RICHMOND BOROUGH  3

Hornchurch needed a win to remain in second place in the league, but fell behind to two early goals, both the result of defensive errors. In the ninth minute Inigo Echepare needlessly raced out of his goal and conceded a penalty, from which BEN HARRIS scored, and two minutes later Phil Starkey was left stranded on the right and the cross from Luke Wanadio fell invitingly for BEN HARRIS to turn and fire home.

This was not the ideal start, but Hornchurch pulled a goal back when Rickie Hayles was fouled, and GEORGE PURCELL struck the free kick past the six player wall of defenders and into the net.

Hornchurch almost levelled after a Martin Tuohy cross, which Purcell diverted to Chris Bourne, but Rodney Chiweshe blocked the ball on the line, whilst at the other end Ben Osman hit a shot too high and over the bar.

A long throw from Chris Bourne gave Tuohy a shooting opportunity, but the ball was turned out for a corner. Bourne’s corner was only partially cleared and the ball was played back, but the final shot went over the bar.

A Tom Hickey corner was overhit and the ball went harmlessly across goal, before Tambeson Eyong conceded a corner with what can best be described as a misplaced back pass from the half way line. Close to half time Payne again went close to scoring with a shot which drifted wide of the goal.

A minute into the second half and a long throw from Rickie Hayles reached Eyong at the far post, but his shot was scrambled off the line for a corner.

Luke Wanadio took advantage of a defensive lapse to run clear, but Echepare made a good save.

Hornchurch had a good chance to draw level when Eyong won the ball deep inside his own half, and his long pass up field gave Tuohy a clear run at goal, but Tuohy dragged his shot wide of the post.

Joey May replaced Danny Phillips, and when Harris conceded a free kick for a foul on Payne three minutes later, most were expecting May to float the kick across. Instead it was Bourne who took the kick and the ball was headed home at the far post by RICKIE HAYLES.

Leigh Bremner came on for Chris Bourne as Hornchurch threw players forward in an effort to get the winning goal, but Hayles conceded a free kick, Hickey sent the ball low into the goalmouth and BEN HARRIS touched it home.

Carl Rook replaced Tuohy, and Hornchurch continued to come forward. Play was held up for some time when Harris remained on the ground after Payne had won the ball. To make things worse, Payne was then booked for seemingly protesting to the referee. Five minutes were added on for stoppages but Hornchurch could make little impression on the packed Hampton defence.
