CARSHALTON ATHLETIC 0 HORNCHURCH 1 A comfortable win over Carshalton, if a one nil scoreline can be called comfortable, at a near deserted Colston Avenue – there were just twenty one spectators on the massive terrace over the far side at kick off time. Hornchurch rarely allowed Carshalton a shot at goal, despite the first half tally of six corners to Carshalton compared to only two for Hornchurch. This compared to the other statistic of two offsides against Carshalton compared to six against Hornchurch, with George Purcell and Stefan Payne the offenders. Hornchurch kicked down the slope in the first half and almost scored in the opening seconds when Carshalton’s 17-year old keeper, Michael White, diverted a George Purcell shot around the post. Joey May’s corner was cleared, and Carshalton won a corner at the other end. Elliot Styles headed the ball away and Billy Coyne played it deep upfield to Purcell, who ran forward and fired in a dangerous shot which was kept out of the net by a diving White in the home goal. Despite their position at the foot of the table, Carshalton had an equal share of the territorial play, and when Rickie Hayles was penalised for a tackle, the free kick, taken by Reece Hall, led to two successive corners. Hornchurch came close to scoring when Purcell crossed to Michael Spencer, whose shot went wide of the post, and it was Spencer again who went close, following a Joey May corner. STEFAN PAYNE scored what was to be the only goal of the match with a fine solo run from the left, followed by his usual neat finish, but Carshalton came back with two successive corners, although Inigo Echepare did not have to make a save. Tambeson Eyong was prominent in many of the moves, though his runs frequently ended with a free kick, as the home side struggled to deal with him, but Eyong then dropped back into defence to make an excellent interception when the ever-dangerous Paris Hamilton-Downes almost broke through. In stoppage time Eyong made what appeared to be a perfectly legitimate tackle on Adriano Moraes, but this led to a confrontation at the end of which Tambeson was booked, and the Carshalton free kick was deflected away for a corner. Hornchurch dominated the second half without being able to increase their lead - the closest the home side could manage was two crosses, both of which Inigo had to have two attempts to catch, with the Hornchurch defence dealing comfortably with the home forwards. At the other end, it was home keeper White who was in frequent action, saving from Purcell after good approach work from Spencer, and then dealing with May’s corner. Spencer to Purcell again, and White saved. Carshalton continued to have difficulty in dealing with Tambeson Eyong – or, to be more precise, difficulty in dealing legally with Tambeson – but when he was allowed to complete a run without being brought down, he crossed to Spencer, who touched back to May, whose first time shot screamed over the bar. Purcell just failed to beat White with a neat chip from outside the area, and the same player went close a few minutes later following a good run by Phil Starkey. Purcell once again, this time from a Spencer pass, and it was White to the rescue for the home side. White made the save of the math when Stefan Payne ran clear, coming out quickly and saving in style. As the pressure increased White turned a Payne shot onto the post, and the keeper then rose to catch May’s corner under pressure. Eyong opened up the home defence to set up Purcell, but the shot went the wrong side of the post. Perhaps to the relief of the home defence, Martin Tuohy came on for George Purcell, but they quickly discovered that there was to be no let-up, when White could not hold Tuohy’s first shot, and there were loud appeals that the ball had crossed the line – the referee and linesman were not impressed and play continued. Tuohy then hit in a hard shot from a narrow angle which was cleared off the line. But the final few minutes were more of a Stefan Cox spectacular. Cox came on ten minutes from time, and was quickly in action, earning himself a booking, along with Frankie Curley. With feelings still high, Joey May went into the book a minute later for a mistimed tackle, and Cox was again in the picture when Stefan Payne was sent crashing to the ground on the edge of the area, when he was about to shoot. Result – a free kick for Hornchurch, and a second yellow, followed by a first red, to Cox. Payne was immediately replaced by Chris Bourne, who had just four minutes on the pitch, but in those four minutes he kept the play locked up in the home half. So one nil – comfortable? – yes, but it could have easily been a lot more.

RalphC
Should you have scored more? I see from the table at http://www.nonleague.co.uk/tables/isthmian-league-premier.php that you have slipped to third - thought you were second?
