Dagger03
I have posted the report onto the forum at the request of Rob and one or two others. If there is enough interest, I will post future reports onto the forum, though I feel that the correct place for up to date news can only be the official web site. After a Joey May free kick had been held by Bobby Smith, and a George Purcell long range shot had sailed high out of the ground and into Summers Lane, where it landed on top of a passing van, Tambeson Eyong went considerably closer, with a shot which was deflected out for a corner. Eyong, playing much more in the inside forward position, again went close with a shot, which was again deflected for a corner, whilst a Stefan Payne shot met the same fate. With Tambeson causing problems whenever he gained possession, it was perhaps no surprise when he created the opening goal, when he was brought down some 35 yards out. GEORGE PURCELL took the free kick, and planted it firmly past the wall of defenders and into the net. Wingate had scarcely crossed the half way line but gave warning that they could be dangerous when Tommy Tejan-Sie found space on the left, and Inigo Echepare, until then a spectator, made a fine save. Payne made a good run, his shot being tipped out for a corner by Bobby Smith, but Joey May swerved the corner onto the roof of the net, possibly helped there by the strong wind. Back to the other end, and Eyong was denied by a spectacular save by Bobby Smith, who turned the ball out for another corner, although Danny Phillips swerved the corner onto the roof of the net. Wingate again came forward, and Michael Spencer cleared a dangerous cross from Tejan-Sie, and although play was usually confined to the other end, the best Hornchurch could achieve was another corner by Phillips, which Bobby Smith punched clear. In stoppage time in the first half, Wingate had the ball in the net, but the flag was already raised for offside. Phil Starkey replaced Danny Phillips at half time, and moved to left back. Wingate looked livelier up front, and won a corner, thanks to a timely tackle by Billy Coyne. David Keenleyside sent the ball close to goal, and Inigo rose well to catch under pressure. Hornchurch increased their lead following a good build up, in which Frankie Curley was prominent. Joey May took up the running, and played a neat pass to GEORGE PURCELL twenty five yards out, who immediately dispatched the ball into the net. Eyong, having an inspired game, then fed the ball through to Purcell, who was denied his third goal by an excellent Bobby Smith save. Eyong then moved in towards goal at speed, but was tackled as he was about to shoot, and the ball went out for a corner. Purcell took the kick and Bobby Smith punched clear. Phil Starkey won the ball inside his own half, moved upfield, crossed into the middle, and Purcell hit his shot narrowly over the bar. May and Michael Spencer combined well to slide the ball through to Purcell, who moved in sharply towards goal, and, from a narrow angle, sent his shot inches wide of the far post. Bobby Smith was in action yet again, saving from Stefan Payne, but the third goal seemed inevitable, and it came when Payne was fouled on the edge of the area. Joey May took the free kick, and TAMBESON EYONG headed home at the far post, his first headed goal for Hornchurch. Martin Tuohy replaced Payne, and Luke Read came on for May. Read slotted in at the back, whilst Tuohy quickly made his presence felt with a dangerous corner which Bobby Smith punched out. Spencer became the fifth Hornchurch player to take a corner – the others were Phillips, May, Spencer and Purcell – and Hornchurch continued to press, but were unable to add any further goals, the closest being a header by Rickie Hayles from a Purcell corner.
