Best SSML groundsman? - discuss

Recommended Posts

SSML have nominated Hanwell, Bedford & Amersham to go forward to the FA to represent the League in the regional awards for Step 5 & 6.

I've not been to Amersham for a few years but it used to be awful - has it got much better?

The Hanwell decision seems bizarre given the number of postponements they've had & the pictures I've seen of the surface.

AFC Dunstable & Baldock had been excluded as both grounds had been nominated for the Step 4 awards.

The best when I was still playing were probably Hanwell, Harefield, Risborough & Broxbourne

Given that Ampthill Town, Biggleswade United and Leverstock Green lost very few games due to the awful wet weather surely their ground-staff deserve acknowledging

Tring have only had one game unplayable this season which was a reserve game with a small lake on the pitch !! We had another ref for the reserves decide he'd rather go shopping on a Saturday afternoon & call one off dispite the pitch being perfectly playable.  Our groundsman & others had put loads of hours in getting it ready & Camberley had travelled all the way up to us

I have to give a big shout to the groundsmen at Berko, Ampthill and Biggleswade who all got matches on against us despite terrible weather when most other matches were postponed.

I also think the efforts by quite a few fans at Hertford Town FC have been amazing to make the pitch playable again despite it being underwater for all but one week from Christmas Eve to 26th Feb because of river flooding.

I think it would be a great idea for the league to arrange an annual awards party for groundsmen that can be sponsored by industry suppliers and gives them a chance to meet each other and share knowledge and perhaps work out how to share equipment as well.

Referees are asked to send in their nominations for the best 3 pitches in the League so I'm guessing an award is given for this.

Well that's different to best groundsman though

Winslow Boy makes a decent point about there being a distinction between best groundsman and best pitch, but I think it's difficult to comment on the former unless you're very familiar with the conditions someone's had to contend with, how many teams use a pitch, etc. That said, the fact that New Bradwell St Peter haven't had a single home game postponed this season (one abandoned, but none postponed) is pretty impressive.

Can't believe that Craig at Chesham hasn't been mentioned at all

Well surely that is classed as step 3 so he wouldn't be for step 6.

Our pitch is always decent. Looked after by our ground staff led by Bill with two assistants. We do not lose many games to the weather. He does this on a small budget and takes real pride in presentation of the pitch. For me when our management team tells us how good the pitch is, it means something.

Best pitch was Harefield's pitch. There are some really poor pitches out there. No good rewarding the best raise the level of the worst would be a much better really.

I suppose it wouldn't make sense to ask linesman would it, anyway Cockfosters and Hillingdon Borough would be two of your three nominations wouldn't they
