A New Low

Just thought I'd add a positive to quite a negative (constructive) thread....

The Ref yesterday, Unsure of his name, in our game away to Kentish Town, was brilliant, yeah he made a couple of mistakes but he was big enough to accept that and used his assistants really well. Only one booking in the game which he had to do.

The problem with having young referees isn't, in my view, in their ability to officiate correctly as per the rules of the game, Part of making decisions in any aspect of life is applying sense gained through life experience, which , by definition, isn't as readily available to a teenager as someone more senior. Respect for officials is sadly lacking at certain levels, but asking a boy to do a man's job may not be the answer

Certain refs take the letter of the law and some ones ref with common sense, its all about interpretation, but I will say refs wont give a pen for a challenge but if it happened on the half way line they would blow up instantly, one said last week the forward wasnt in control of the ball when the keeper clattered him, but 5 mins later he gave a foul on the half way line and said it wasn't intensional but he was abit late???????, to me there is no difference exept weak officiating in the spartan, any good ref doesn't stick around long in that league

But doesn't your example apply at all levels?

You always see penalties turned down when it would be a free kick anywhere else- you see it every Saturday- either on tv in the Premiership, or on the SSML.

The best refs rise to the top- they're only as good as the standard they ref!

You are probably right on that front, but they stay at this level because of there inconsistency, wish they had the bottle to make them desicions as opposed to giving free kicks for defenders fouling forwards facing away from goal yet no fouls for defenders deliberately blocking forwards, really gets my goat!

I've come to accept being in reserve division 2 we get the young refs on the way up and the old ones on the way down! Can't remember the last time we had a ref in their late 20's or even 30's. I told my players the referee makes less mistakes a game than they do as well.

If this is the case, where does the league get referees from? Bear in mind that when you get to a certain age demotion occurs and there are other referees who cannot commit to it anymore. You would be left with a lesser number of referees, which as a knock on effect would make more people moan about the level of the officials.

I will say that the referee in the game yesterday between Biggleswade and Oxhey Jets was okay, few mistakes here and there but overall I would say he did fairly well. One assistant was very young and very nervous by the look of it

A good ref? One who people don't even notice. One who sees their part as ensuring those playing are given the chance to do so, One who can view incidents in the context of a game, rather than simply go' by the book', One who is prepared to explain and be proactive, if they believe it will save tears later. One that enjoys what they do, rather than see every game as a stepping stone to something better or a stage to show what they can do. One who is not afraid to do the difficult and potentially unpopular things  for the sake of integrity.

Everyone will have their own take on what makes a good 'un...but that's why they're opinions, not facts.
