A New Low

If you believe an assessor (or three) had an effect on the referee, presumably you've had this referee for another 'nearby' game?

How has the referee "...spoilt the game for 176 paying spectators...", was this not the fault of the player who attempted to head-but an opponent?

PTG. Am I right in assuming referees are assessed in approx. 66% / 75% of Premier Division games, and only in Divisions One and Two if the referee is going for promotion?

Your percentages are about right.

A Level 4 Referee doing Prem Div games needs to be assessed 5 or 6 times and must officiate at least 10 middles.

Assistant Referee's who line on games that a Level 4 is being assessed on will receive a Development Form from the Assessor with Strengths and Development Areas highlighted and a mark.

Referees outside of the Prem Div who are assessed  are looking to get promoted up to and including Level 5.

I believe the Assessors have to inform the Referees that they are to be assessed in advance of the game.

Don't forget that Club Marks also play a part on a Referees quest for promotion (or relegation  ) during the Marking Season.

The ref in Tring vs Ampthill was being assessed on Saturday. I'd imagine showing a red card for an incident he didn't see, without consulting with his assistants & based on what the 8 or so surrounding Ampthill players told him, wouldn't have given him too many plaudits !!

First of all it was not a head butt. 2 players slowly kissed their heads together as they squared up to each other. One went down like a sack of spuds. "Fair play" to him as he got what he wanted. The Hertford Town player is a more inexperienced 18 year old with absolutely no malice in him who I would affectionately describe as a gentle midget.

But referees (in this case linos) can make mistakes and I don't really have a problem with that decision on its own. But the last 3 games in which we have had 6 cautions in a match there has been an assessor. The match before and the match after the St Mags game we never had a single player cautioned but in the St Mags game there were 7.

It was a local derby in front of 176 excited fans. We need referees strong enough to take this in to account and taking players and captains aside to calm them down instead of punishing every little incident. My bone of contention is that this was predictable. I spoke to the manager before the game and told him we would get 6 bookings today as the ref was being assessed and that he should try to calm the players down. As it turns out that game has cost players £150 in fines and the club another £600 fine. That is ridiculous in a match where there was not a single nasty tackle.

The fans do not pay to watch a sterile affair with no passion. Our players are not at all nasty but do like to try the best for the fans who cheer them on.

I would love to see the stats that compare the number of cards given when referees are being assessed compared to when they are not. I would bet my house there is a huge difference between them.

I know there are practical difficulties of implementing it but we have to have anonymous assessors.

As PTG pointed out referees are also subject to poor marks if they issue incorrect cautions.

You have a couple of potential issues:

If the assessor deems all cautions were correct based on the laws of the game, the issue based on people's opinions on here, appears to be referees apply the laws more stringently when assessors are around.

If the assessor deems all cautions/dismissals were not correct, surely that report should go to the FA and the punishments should be rescinded.

If on reflection the former is more prevalent, surely by having anonymous assessments we run the risk of referees being that strict every game, as such you would end up with that many cautions every game.

In the current situation do you take the occasional game like that and appreciate players get away with similar most weeks.

That worked!

I think the team is a reflection of the manager and he was clearly too pumped up.

Another question for PTG , can an assessors report be used for any appeal to a red card?

I believe only video evidence can be used and then it must show a clear error by the Referee.

And that is the flaw in the system. No evidence this happens and still a cost to the club/player regardless if the referee was incorrect based on assessment.

PTG - is there a standard form completed and is this readily available to all?

There is a standard assessment form.

Clubs are not privy to the Referees' assessments.
