Saturday 1st March

DIVISION TWO

1-0 Grendon Rangers v Old Bradwell United

A report on this one from another Forum:

Grendon Rangers 1 Old Bradwell United 0 (Spartan South Midlands League Division 2) Att: 42 h/c

Much better than it sounds. What a contrast to the miserable gits at Crawley Down: a cheerful welcome from everyone, a free mug of tea and a biscuit and a most enjoyable chat to start the afternoon off. The game was pretty good - the sides were very evenly matched, both had splendid defences and both needed a decent striker to finish the job off. We identified home midfielder Cameron MacPherson as the man most likely, and sure enough he broke the deadlock in the 87th minute with a cool finish of a different class to all the previous efforts from both sides. Played in excellent spirit, an almost total absence of dissent and nasty tackles, and very well refereed.

The ground was better than I had expected - a permanent rope and posts job and a reasonable bit of cover, but with the potential to provide accidental brain surgery for anyone taller than me. Good company in the form of Mr Smallman, who shared my concern about a possible 0-0 - neither of us have had one since the infamous night at Llanwrst; 4 page prog was a gift at 50p; a quid for the raffle and half time tea another quid.

Strange Tales of Groundhopping, No. 165: a chap arrived at about 2.15, purchased two programmes then drove away. He reappeared at half time, watched the first 8 minutes then walked away and was not seen again. Very, very odd.

Went to Stony Stratford v Buckingham Athletic less said about the game the better, two very VERY poor sides that would be languishing in division below or north bucks even. Stony deserved their win, central midfielder who I'm sure I saw playing for Buckingham Town and Aylesbury United few years back is an absolute clown and got himself sent off, Buckingham's manager who was an excellent player in his day just spends the game screaming and swearing way way beyond anything I have seen and it rubs off on his players. The usually prolific Phil Martin looked totally disinterested and should have had a hattrick, why he is playing for this team I don't know. Poor, poor, poor game all round.

Pretty fair report, story of our season lacking quality in front of goal.

Just like to say, thought our game v Hoddesdon was played in a great spirit. Both teams got on with the game and it seemed all the players on both sides had respect for each other. Congrats should go to the management teams for sending their teams out with the right frame of mind. I know the watching SSMFL members were impressed as well. Fair result too. Lets hope the return fixture next month is the same.

Yes that was very nasty, they didn't cover themselves in glory yesterday. However I saw your game against Athletic and your centre half clashed with this midfielder in a similar fashion and the lad never stopped moaning about it during the game and in the bar, seemed to think he'd done nothing wrong yesterday, players and managers never think they've done anything wrong but then have a go at everyone else, thats football I guess.

Seems strange for the League not to allow the use of Crawley's 3G but then to allow Stony play on their 2nd pitch. I assume this is the one on the cricket pitch with no floodlights (hence the 2.30pm kick off) , no railings, walkways or cover for spectators etc
