FA Vase Quarter Finals

Recommended Posts

Just got back and I feel sick. Everyone in the ground today witnessed a daylight robbery, we played them off the park most of the game, their first shot at goal was a fluky cross that sailed in . Early  second half we had  our  right back sent off for 2nd yellow, can't disagree with the ref, we still dominated play and then equalised, then we had another sending off for 2nd yellow, again can't disagree with the ref. Still we dominated with 9 men and so very nearly equalised. We will never get an opportunity like this again but was'nt to be. My only complaint apart from the loss is that the ref never gave us anything and we had two penalty shouts turned down in first half, also the ref never even spoke to any of their players about the fouls that they committed. Although we only had ourselves to blame for not keeping our  discipline. The players gave everything today. On this showing, i  would be very surprised if  Eastbourne  progress any further. .

If you bothered reading all those links to match reports you post you would have seen the following

Ampthill Town’s FA Vase dream came to an end as their brave run was ended with a 2-1 defeat in front of a crowd of a massive crowd of 4,406 at Eastbourne United on Saturday.

We came up short whatever the reasons. Sorry we couldnt do the SSML League proud and get you to a Vase final. We tried so hard and I think Craig, the players and club won a lot of friends at Eastbourne. Speaking from a dug out view on things the management, groundstaff and supporters of our opponents couldnt have been any more welcoming and were dignified and respectful during and after the game when they told us the best team on the day lost. But all credit to them they were the best team as they won 2-1 and thats what counts. We wish them all the best in the semi final and dont be surprised if they upset the apple cart. Nice people.

It means a lot when we were told that we were by far the best team they have played this season and I wont lie it hurts as a coach when someone calls our style of play kick and rush ( a previous post on here )

We play one up front and wth wide men so we cant play it long, we have to try to play through midfield or get it to the wingers. We go long from set peices or throws as in Christian Lester and Tyrone Taylor we have two of the best headers of the ball in the division. Who doesnt get it in the box from those situations? We coach and encourage the team to play when we can, playing surfaces and opposition allowing and I think it is unfair and unjust to label us like that.

Howvever I guess thats just my opinion like others have theirs but I would hope the majority of people who actually watch us think we play decent attacking football in the right way.

100 + goals normally signifies that. I wont use the forum again I just wanted to have my say before leaving and removing the temptation to bite and get involved when I appreciate clubs and their players and staff should leave it to others to give us the benefit of their wisdom and say nothing.

Its hard when I know how hard this set of players have worked to get where they are only to be criticised and insulted completely unjustly. That said I wish all SSML clubs the very best for the remainder of the season.

Steve, afraid you got it wrong in the first line of your post

You did do the SSML proud. Your club is a credit to the SSML and as someone recently said to me "Don't let the turkeys grind you down"

Yes Karen is right, you have to rise above some

of the pettiness that taints non league football and just be happy that you know in your own mind you are working very hard for a common cause.

Ampthill you HAVE done us proud. Getting this far and the mentality you have had throughout has been fantastic.

I wholeheartedly enjoyed my trip to Ampthill Park when you played Norwhich, and found everyone very welcoming. A great club, that I hope to see promoted in the next few seasons

It was always going to be a big ask at Eastbourne United, had it been a home draw then I'm sure we would have all been looking forward to a two legged semi final

Steve, everyone involved with Ampthill and the SSMFL should and rightfully are very proud of what you have achieved this season. You have put Ampthill and the SSMFL back on the footballing map and hopefully it will give encouragement to teams next season that the SSMFL is as good as any level in the FA VASE and can give it a right good go. Congratulations to you all, superb achievement for any club to get a Quarter Final of a National competition.

( I cant remember who said it! )

Kind words, thank you its much appreciated.

Spoke with Craig yesterday (over a few drinks) and it hit us both very hard to lose in those circumstances. Obviously even more so the players. I will pass on your praise to them and hope it lifts them as we still have a lot to play for.

God knows how Chalfont felt to lose in the semi on penalties!!

I can't help feeling a little short changed like I was when Ampthill Town went out narrowly to Oadby Town, that's not taking anything away from the achievement of reaching the FA Vase Quarter Finals
