Thoughts from a groundhopper

FA Vase, 4th Round Proper
Hanwell Town 2 Ashford United 1
(played at Ashford United FC)
Admission £6 Attendance 286

At the seventh time of asking the 4th Round of the Vase was finally completed. The pitch was sodden, soggy, squelchy, even slippery, as the Hanwell keeper could attest to, but it was undoubtedly playable. In the first minute, from the first back pass, the Hanwell keeper went sprawling as the ball came near; to his relief Ashford missed their chance. For the next half hour both sides were diligent and organised without being able to create clear chances. Suddenly, with the game humdrum, there was a startling period of play as Ashford spent about a minute firing shots at goal from inside the box as Hanwell did everything they could to maintain parity. In that bizarre moment the referee waved away two handball claims, Hanwell blocked three goalbound shots, and the woodwork came to their aid. Hanwell survived; half time came with the clear sense that Ashford were on top.

An hour gone and little had changed. Suddenly an innocuous ball split the Hanwell defence and Smissen found himself clear. The Hanwell keeper had looked troubled by the conditions and offered no resistance as Ashford took the lead. The Hanwell captain was booked for protesting at the lack of offside flag - it looked like the Ashford player may have just been in his own half when the ball was played.

The goal spurred only Hanwell, who came out of their shells and attacked with more purpose. With 14 minutes left the game changed completely. Clean through on goal, the Ashford keeper made a marvellous save from the Hanwell forward's shot; as he made to knock home the rebound, Ashford's Jordan bundled him over. Not just a red card, but an equaliser from Rhone who calmly converted the penalty.

Hanwell went for it. Many might have waited for extra time with the theory that a man extra on a heavy pitch would have counted for much. Instead, with two minutes remaining, the ball fell to Healy following a scramble in the box. Seven yards out, falling backwards, off balance, he skewed the ball off the outside of his boot into the top corner of the net. There was still time for Ashford to be reduced to 9 men when Miller was involved in an off the ball incident in the centre circle. The 7 minutes of added time was easily negotiated by Hanwell who might have added to their lead as Ashford's nine ran out of answers.

Controversially Ashford had won the right to host the game. But they lost the lead, then their discipline, and ultimately the match.

Justice is served, you might say...

Savagebee - I bet Dominic Rhone was as cool as a cucumber taking that penalty, did you know he had a spell at Tokyngton Manor

I didn't.

He started this season at Staines Lammas FC and was at Slough Town FC last season he is a good crosser of the ball and can take a great free kick.
