Hi Guys,

Here is our match report!!!

Margate U18 Premier 1
VCD Athletic 0
Challenge Cup Quarter Final

Margate faced Premier Division opponents VCD Athletic in the Quarter Finals of the Challenge Cup on Sunday, This was the first time Gate had kicked a competitive ball in over four weeks due to the Xmas break and postponements.

Expecting a slow and subdued tempo from both teams, with the obvious lack of real match practice both teams shocked everyone with the energy the early stages produced. Gate did control the early stages with Lewis Fuller causing Athletic plenty of issues with his high pressure and a series of chances did fall to Man of the match Sam Davies, Travis Jackson & Rene Armstrong but the Athletic keeper was never truly tested. Athletic did push Gate's defensive buttons on more than one occasion only for great work from Edwards, Lawrence, Cheek, Goldsmith & keeper Hills who stood up and never let excellent Mcdonagh get a clear shooting opportunity. The remainder of the half saw several half chances from both sides but no clear cut shooting opportunities and the game really fired up for the second half.

The second half saw no changes for both teams and the same tension in the contest with both teams not over committing but it was a Gate change that really sparked the tie when Simba Nyaruwa replaced Armstrong and with his first touch Nyaruwa beat his marker and his shot beat the VCD keeper but the post denied Gate taking the lead. The breakthrough did arrive for Gate when a excellent ball from Goldsmith set away Nyaruwa and this time his effort flew into the bottom corner to send every crazy and deflate Athletic 1-0. The remaining moments of the game saw several closes calls from VCD and they would of leveled the match but Gate keeper Hills made a fine save that was creeping in the bottom corner.

Manager Will Graham said, This was a true test from a very good outfit and after this long without a competitive fixture i was proud of my teams fitness and determination. The next round sees us up against Phoenix Sports away which will be just as tough but we are within touching distance of the final.

Team: Charlie Hills, Kieron Edwards, Ryan Cheek, Taylor Lawrence, Jack Goldsmith, JJ Donnelly, Harry Priddle ©, Lewis Fuller, Travis Jackson, Rene Armstrong, Sam Davies (MOTM), Pat Okwudinka, Anthony Davies, Ryan Perkins, Simba Nyaruwa, Alex Epps
