Neutral
After discovering Southall pay players this week, I was wondering how many other clubs paid their squad. I really didn't think money was this common at this level. I realise the prem normally has one or two sides who pay their players (Ampthill, Berko and AFC I imagine) but are wages really that common in this league? I find it hard to believe And is it true Hoddesdon have the biggest budget in the league, Jonno (only joking lol)
Karen Browne
Excellent thread but somehow can't see many clubs telling the truth on their playing budgets
wisezola
Interesting Topic, just looking at prem division table, certainly half the teams in that division pay for sure, some as wages, some as just win or point bonus, not sure in division below As always some you hear some very inflated figures, Nothing anything near the levels of Royston or Dunstable Town in recent seasons, but some decent budgets for step 5 for sure We also lost this season Aylesbury and Haringey who were payers
Neutral
Do Tring? Excellent clubhouse and you now own your ground- finance must be pretty good with you! I know Aylesbury and Dunstable both paid last season for a fact. I didn't realise that many prem sides paid, I knew some would. It just took me by suprise to see that Southall did which made me wonder!

The subject of budgets rears it's head on here quite often. We all know who pays lots, little and nowt. But yeah, I don't see people revealing much. Especially as HMRC might be watching. My suspicion is a top player at a top 4 club can earn anything between £50-£100 a game but it's a matter of breaking it down between a flat out appearance fee, goal bonus, clean sheet bonus and/or a win bonus. Not a bad second wage if you play three times in 7 days! I reckon even teams further down the financial ladder pay a small win bonus to their squad of 5 or 10 pounds. wisezola
Yes great to own the freehold, but that needs to be paid for, the club has a loan/mortgage with a good few years to run to pay that back. We are very well run club with great facilities but a lot of hard work and fund raising behind the scenes goes into paying it back, and the up keep of all of that. I can honestly say we don't pay any of our players in any shape or form. I don't think i am blowing any secrets by revealing that we cover away trips over 25 miles for 4 drivers with a £10.00 drinks voucher redeemable at our bar. I find it staggering that clubs pay decent money in wages but can have the worst facilities and pitches, or in a number of cases don't even own there own pitch or facilities. Im in my third season as manager of Tring and doing a rough calculation, i would estimate that in 80 per cent of around 10 7 day approaches i have submitted, i was asked by the player how much we paid within 30 seconds of starting the conversation. The same in the close season when enquiring on players availability from within our league. Some of the figures quoted that I have been asked to match or beat are amazing for step 5. Even with no massive payers in our league this season some of the budgets in our division are still better than a good number of teams in Ryman North or Calor gas central divisions. I have no problem with teams paying, the bit that sticks for me is when they deny it. I have been asked countless times what my budget was, the conversation ends pretty quick when you tell them the truth, its Zero. I came into the job knowing we had no budget, so its not a problem, i think any team that makes the top half of the division and has a decent cup or even a vase run without paying players should be very happy. I think we would all like a little budget to work with, for half the teams in the league its just a dream
Baldock_Town
Interesting topic this. We don't pay either, although we give petrol money to up to five drivers for away matches over a 75-mile round trip. We have three teams, all of whom play at different venues and pitch fees alone cost us over £10,000 per season, so until we have our own facilities, paying players will never be on the agenda for us. Funnily enough before my time, the Club actually paid two players a few seasons ago in the County League as the manager at the time was concerned they would go elsewhere. Come the end of the season they left anyway!
Dirtyclaret
We (Crawley) do not pay any money what so ever. For away games we pay out petrol money as long as they take a car full, however a lot of the time the lads don't take it and put it straight back into the kitty for the end of season weekend away. Last year we went to Brighton, and pretty much all of the first nights drinks were paid for. The lads pay all their own bookings, we also do late/dirty boots/circle of death fines to up the kitty. Things will hopefully change for us in a couple of years when the ground at the Crawley club is developed and the money from gate and bar improves because of this. As for other clubs, as far as I know I would say atleast 10 teams in div1 pay money to players, perhaps not to all their squad, but rumours of certain forwards being on £100+ There is no way we can compete with this, we have to compete for players locally with Barton, Dtfc, Afc D, Stotfold, Lieghton, etc all with decent budgets, but then hearing of teams paying out in div2 it's impossible to bring lads on board, relying on the 'mates' factor. You never know though Roman Abromovich flies through luton....
Jonno
You raise some good points Wisezola. I know a number of players who have talked to other clubs and stated they are earning £40, therefore they want £50. When you speak to their manager, turns out they only earn £20 and are trying it on. Players are as dishonest as clubs when it comes to what's paid out!! It's the world we live in now unfortunately.
Jonno
I also believe that players at this level don't really need the money. They just want to be able to go down the pub with their mates and tell people that they get paid to play football. Check out the number of Spartan League players on twitter who state in their profile that they are a semi professional footballer!! You're not, so shut up. Pathetic. Some great points, I think all clubs struggle with these. Love semi pro shout Jonno I laugh at that too. I hear a lot of talk about what we pay, the club don't pay anyone, we have individuals who sponsor a player, we have done this in the past and if someone wants to put his hand in his pocket and cover a players travel that's up to them, I spoke to Perry and said I'm happy to sponsor a player if needed. We are aiming to be in a position to raise a budget (with some excellent friendliest and increased sponsorship) if only for expenses and maybe a win bonus, unfortunately players these days move around every five minutes for all the reasons stated above. There are a number of local business who have expressed an interest in putting in money, we will see I guess. The main aim is to get the funding in that's available to apply for to develop new clubhouse and facilities. We have decent gates which cover refs I think, but you're talking regular 250+ before any could filter down to playing squad at this level. There have always been teams that pay at this level, many have gone bust more than once and many don't exist anymore. In leagues were many teams are competing for the same players it's always going to be tough and it also seems that players don't care about just wanting to play at best level they can, we have regularly lost players to local leagues cos they can't be bothered, or to play with mates or to big big fish in small pond etc... Always interesting when clubs know for a fact what other clubs are doing but nobody knows what's going on at theirs

Rebadiah Hongfield
No one will say what is paid at a club (mostly because it's all a bit dodgy). Sometimes clubs pay players and the rest of the team don't even know about it. I can remember a few years a ago at Tring, the manager paid only certain players and out of his own pocket. When stuff like that starts comes out, you lose the dressing room. I think you should only pay players if you are aiming for promotion. They should all get the same and then have bonuses (goal, cleen sheet, etc)
