Saturday 25th January – Kick Off 3.00pm unless stated

DIVISION ONE

A-A Winslow United v Langford

A report on the abandonment from another Forum:

Spartan South Midlands League, Division One -

Winslow United 4 Langford 1

(ABANDONED AFTER 45 MINUTES)

Admission £4, reasonable 20 page programme £1, badge £4, pint of Greene King IPA Smooth £2.90, coffee £1

A frustrating and bizarre day. The game kicked off five minutes late due to Winslow deciding to change into their newly sponsored kit of green and black stripes, black shorts and black socks (United normally wear yellow and blue), the second half was delayed at first, and the game was eventually called off at 4.15. A shame, because both teams had played enterprising football in difficult conditions.

The game started with a strong wind diagonally across the pitch and towards Langford’s goal, which clearly assisted Winslow’s first and last goals in the 5th and 37th minutes and also caused an advert hoarding behind the clubhouse goal to be blown 30 yards onto the pitch in only the 2nd minute. There was a mad two minutes with three goals (2-0, 2-1, 3-1) midway through the half and, straight after Winslow’s fourth, strong diagonal rain lashed across the pitch and into the stand and a thunderstorm was not far in the distance.

We swam for the clubhouse at half time, at which point the wind, rain and thunder hit big time, flooding parts of the pitch in the space of ten minutes. The ref delayed the re-start and asked for the surface to be forked (I’ve never seen so many forks on a pitch in my life) but, tellingly, with Winslow on the pitch and raring to go and Langford still in the changing room, the ref decided to abandon the game, causing Winslow joint manager Perry Mercer to become apoplectic with rage.

In fairness to Perry, he introduced himself to me when I arrived at the clubhouse and we had a quick and enjoyable natter. Perry was also helping out with various chores right up to giving his pre-match team talk. Never seen a manager chat to a hopper and help the club out so close to kick-off. An engaging character.

Winslow’s home is fairly basic, with the pitch clearly visible from the adjoining cricket pitch and playgrounds. The ground has one stand, a well thought out Arena type with 50 green seats in front of two steps of terracing. The clubhouse is adjacent to one corner of the pitch, The 'clubhouse end' is paved for spectators and the dugouts are on the opposite side to the stand, with a small croquet lawn just behind on that flank. Despite its spartan arrangement, Winslow’s ground has a homely feel – and at least I know the way there for my re-visit!

DIVISION TWO

1-2 Kent Athletic v Mursley United

A report from another Forum:

Kent Athletic 1 v 2 Mursley Utd South Midlands League Div 2 Admission Nil Prog £1 Att 24 h/c

Looking at all the reports myslef and Henfield Bee got lucky here as the kick off was at 2pm and the storms most people encountered hit not long after the end of the game, in fact nearby Luton Town had a temporary suspension to their game. The pitch is fully railed off but no hardstanding, their is a small amount of cover behind the goal at the clubhouse end. For a game betwen 2nd and 3rd the first half was very poor, the only thing of note happening was the sending off after 6 minutes when a Kent Athletic player was correctly sent off for a two footed challenge. Second half was much better and the 10 men of Kent Athletic were the better team but fell behind with 20 minutes to go, they equalised with 10 to go but then lost out right at the end when a mis hit cross fell nicely to a Mursley forward who scored from 6 yards out. By the time we got to the M1 the storm was arriving.

:sun:

A really nasty storm hit Bedfont & Feltham FC at around 16:25 and the game was held up for 15 mins it was really bad very heavy rain and it was really windy the rain was freezing I was hiding behind the dug outs with the Ref, players were behind the stand it was chaos players and officals were running every where the rain was so heavy you couldn't see a thing I was drenched right through but they finished the game which Bedfont & Feltham won 6-1 with four goals by ex Hanwell Town player Javonne Molloy.

When this picture was being taken i was hiding behind the dug out soon to be joined by the ref I kid you not.
