Observations And How Do We Beat Southend?

Couldn’t have got off to a worse possible start when we let their player cut in without a challenge (was that Gower the Forbes from 3 years ago!). Potter may have been partly unsighted, but the ball zipped off the surface and gathered pace when it bounced and probably surprised Potter.

But what character we showed to get back in the game when with a lot of teams, the energy would have just drained from them. It was great to see the belief and we soon broke back.

What could you say were the danger areas that Southend offered and what can we do?

They looked to be dangerous down the flanks, set pieces and at times seemed a bit fitter and faster, as you would expect, but other than that.

What was noticeable is that Duffers did not seem to be the same player from the start. Not a lot went right from him and he seemed heavy legged at times, but what a shot early in the second half that produced a fine save by their keeper. Duffers was given a hard time and I hope he can muster up one of his better performances as he has been playing well this season.

On the other flank, we again looked quite vulnerable at times and luckily Southend did not have the class to make much of it.

I and many have been saying this for a long time now but JK (Kennedy) has to play as a right wing back. Midgeley just seems to go missing and we lose that outlet which has been one of our strongest areas over recent years. Also, our wing backs have to play a bit more defensively.

In the centre midfield, we should have Dobinson and then a long list from Parms, Gooden and I wonder how Cowan would play there or even Bennett if fit, but you need players with height who can battle.

Boylan and Gregory seemed to be too isolated at times and hence Boylan was replaced towards the end as he did not get much of the ball as he normally does. Did we break too quick so there was a big gap between the midfield and defence? We need to get that ball pinging around their area with our little one two’s where we know we can finish and not try the long range efforts.

In all this, hopefully this is not taken as criticism as this is one of the best ever Canvey performances as we are two divisions lower than them, but from what I saw, a couple of changes could decrease some of the threat they possess.

i thought canvey looked quite poor!

especally in the 2nd half you did'nt have much poccession or goal chances and WE SHOULD OF WON UP.

BUT WE HAVE NOT LOST AWAY FOR AGES SO WE WILL BEAT U PIKEYS AT UR PLACE

i think maybe in the second half not losing became the priority after that start!!.. i thought we looked pretty good, tho i agree on having j.k. out wide.. second half southend had the better of territiry n possession but we broke well with minton in particular having a stormer. these breaks and the wilingness to attack kept relieving any pressure southend wanted to keep on.. away at the league club we did brilliantly.. i think it will be a tight game at the lane.. one goal in it?

great to see the players come over at the end they looked to have really enjoyed the game and wardy was having fun, pulling that face after he headed out for a corner.. thats what footballs all about, not some poncing prima donna whinging about his boot sponser or something

to be honest i think canvey fell into a counter attacking game that didnt suit us. everytime we actualy played the game on the ground and passed the ball about we broke through the southend defence easly. we are a team that scores lots of goals because we go on the attack.

to be honest i was disapointed by canveys performance. and most of the time seemed happy with the draw when i feel they could have gone on for the win

That's true Ken. How many times have we had so much possession upfield then suddenly lose out to a counter attack and are punished by a fluke goal.

You could not be disappointed by Canvey's performance as our opponents are two divisions higher, so things were always going to be more difficult than we are used to at times. Overall, you could see the fitness of a full time training league side and they were able to get back and cover when things broke down for them.

Hopefully, we may have learnt one or two things that we could change or use tomorrow week.

im not to sure about the fitness thing. when that southend player had to be taken off. i saw three southend players sitting on the ground where as all the canvey players stayed on their feet. one or two canvey players lost a bit of speed but all in all i think they held their own. there were points at the end that canvey looked the fitter team

[color:"green"]This has been the story of Southend's season so far. Too many goals conceded after the opposition break away. If you wish to beat us, which you won't then you too will have to attack on the break!

Beware, big Drewe Broughton has found the net at last and if he plays on Wednesday then you will be sorry![/color]

I agree. we were too direct too quickly. When we get back to park lane we need to make sure we have width.

I know that park lane is smaller so the long ball tactic may work but if i was jeff, i would train the players on more than 1 tactic so if push comes to shove we can REALLY pressure the southend(scum) defence and maybe test their keeper a few more times.
