Former Margate star passes away

Just had some sad news - Margate's second highest post war goalscorer Alan Blackburn has passed away aged 78.

He scored 122 times from 211 appearances for the club spanning the four seasons from 1961/62 to 1964/65, finishing as Margate's top scorer in the first three of those seasons.

A former West Ham player, there's a tribute to Alan on the Hammers' site at http://www.whufc.com/articles/20140114/alan-blackburn-1935-2014_2236884_3620469 and his profile on my site can be found at http://www.margatefchistory.com/alanblackburn.shtml

A true giant of a player for Margate.  Leapt like a salmon to outjump centrehalves to bullet the ball into the net. Simply one of the best headers of a football that I ever saw, and that includes Ron Davies and John Charles.

Will always remain in the memory of watching a lifetime of football. A joy to watch, even on a wet stormy Tuesday night at Hartsdown.

Sad loss.
