Ftfc
Don't know if this has been a topic before but why isn't there playoffs at step 5 and 6? Surely now for 1/2 of the two leagues there's nothing to play for.

Ftfc
Ok lol what's the reasoning behind not doing it?
CW1975
Step 6 to 5 is because there are 3 up 3 down so no real need. Don't think it would work from step 5 to 4 if you throw another team from each step 5 div to get promoted, it looks like it could already be a headache for club placement for one team coming down as pointed out in another thread anyway. You may end up with teams that have not applied for promotion also which would mean a complete waste of time anyway. Plus Nice Guy backed it so it must be a bad idea!!! Terrence Collina
also you can never guarantee when a team will complete their fixtures.

Weeble
Frfc maybe ask the CCL board or the FA as it would be interesting to get a defining answer Cheers
Green_Fingers
Playoffs for an extra promotion place at Step 5 wont happen because 14 extra promoted teams will mean 14 extra relegated -there is no way the Step 4 Leagues will allow 28 of the members to be relegated each season. E&E Rich
Because of the way the Country is shaped there will always a bottle neck somewhere IMO. For many years it was between the Football League and the non-league world, but it is currently between Step 4 and 5. Seeing as Step 4 and 5 are Senior but Step 6 is technically Intermediate, I would change the structure substantially and also remove a Step of the pyramid by changing the current 1-2-3-6-12 system to a 1 (Conference National - unchanged) -4 (Conference) -8 (Premier) -16 (Division 1) system with 20 clubs in the Division 1 leagues and 22 in the two steps above, which would reduce a lot of the travel issues that teams face when they are suddenly transferred, because there are more leagues at each level, and also move many clubs a further step up the pyramid. The only issues with this idea are that a) it would cause a similar bottle neck between Step 1 and 2, where only step 2 Champions could be promoted, although you could argue that this is a more natural place for where it should be, with many pro sides at step 1 and almost all semi-pro at 2 or lower, AND b ) administratively there would be issues as you would probably have to merge and rename many or all step 3 / 4 / 5 leagues below the Conference and reallocate the League officials, and also the referees / Assistants into some new Leagues with non-descript names (e.g. South West Premier or East Midlands Division 1. However, the long term benefit would be felt across the whole of the semi-pro structure with the possible exception of some highly ambitious Step 2 clubs but to go up from Step 2 as Champions they will surely be well equipped for life at a higher level and we should see less clubs falling into administration. It would also enable the North East and South West to be fully incorporated into the structure, as instead of a Conference North and South, you'd have a Conference North (meaning proper North, not Bishops Stortford, Oxford or Gloucester), Conference Midlands (North of Birmingham roughly), a Conference Midlands and West and a Conference South East which would include East Anglia. No team would have to deal with National travel until they reach Step 1 (with exception of a Trophy or Vase run) and this would be more attractive to a Truro or a Whitley Bay or others who are geographically extreme. Step 6 / 7 would be merged into a new step 5 with a far more relaxed ground grading structure, with requests for election required between step 6 and 5, as opposed to 5 and 4 as is the case now. In that new step, because there would be 16 leagues above them, you could even have 32 county style leagues below or more likely 24 with an opportunity for playoffs there too (assuming they had the grading). Then, you could get playoffs from the new step 4 to step 3 and from 3 to 2 although as I say, only Step 2 Champions could go up unless Step 1 allowed more than four to be relegated, which seems unlikely. There would be a bonus for those clubs though, as I would remove Step 1 from the FA Trophy which seems to be more devalued these days, and so the Step 2 clubs would be favoured to be making a Wembley appearance from time to time. The Trophy would be exclusively for the Step 2 and new step 3 clubs while the Vase would remain unchanged. Simples
