My right to reply to the my right to reply thread

If I may, I would like to have my say on this matter. First of all, this is a public forum so we have to expect that certain semi-literate and, judging by the tone and content of their offerings, unpleasant individuals will insist on embarrassing themselves with their pointlessly negative ramblings and ranting. I don’t need to name them; we know who they are.

I hadn’t actually read the newspaper report, so until Steve’s post I had no idea of its existence. I’m sure I wasn’t alone in that, so I suppose Steve’s reply here gave it a greater readership. Having said that, despite what some people appear to think, Steve is absolutely within his rights to voice his opinion if he sees fit.

We do not know exactly what was said between George and the journalist. All we have to go on is what the journalist tells us was said. Anyway, the way the article is written certainly paints ‘previous management’ and ‘previous people’ in a negative light. As is typical in poorly written sports journalism predictable verbs crop up; in this case ‘hit out’ and ‘insist’ (twice). Journalists have to ‘make’ stories even when there isn’t one: a few cherry-picked quotes allied to the omission of the acknowledgement of mitigating circumstances can totally change the tenor of an argument. Let’s also bear in mind that mistakes and inconsistencies are typical. Here’s a quote attributed to George from the Enfield Independent dated 10/12/13:  ‘The players are training for one hour on a Tuesday and one hour on a Thursday and I don’t think that is enough in this league.’ And here’s one dated 17/12/13: ‘You can’t just train for an hour on a Thursday and to have players feeling sick from running is abysmal. To do just one hour a week is absolutely ridiculous and outrageous.’

We also don’t know exactly what was said between Steve and George in the phone conversation: what we have is Steve’s version of events. I’m not suggesting by any means that he is deliberately twisting what was said, but we all know that people can get the wrong end of the stick, can hear what they want to hear, and can also remember incorrectly.

Having said that, and returning to the issue of fitness, after the Carshalton game I heard George say to us supporters something along the lines of: ‘Once we get fit, we’ll start winning’. Liam has also tweeted a positive message about harder training sessions. It was clearly something on George’s mind from the beginning, and Steve has eloquently explained the situation from his perspective.

I guess, Steve, that this message is as much for you personally as it is to the general forum readership. I certainly have spoken to you face-to-face, on more than one occasion. In fact, if you’ve got a good memory, you’ll be able to work out who I am if I mention this: after the Wingate game (when I think we all knew what was coming – the atmosphere was palpable) I came up to you to shake your hand and let you know that whatever was going to happen I wanted to thank you for what you had done and in particular for one of the most unforgettable moments in my life – that semi-final night against Grays.

As a Towner, I obviously hope that we stay up and I hope that George will build on your good work. When all this silliness has died down and is long forgotten, you’ll be remembered as the manager who got Enfield Town into the Premier League. And I still haven’t bought you a pint yet!
