dflman
As a MISA committee member I thought I might update you all on a project that have been working on. The 'Brown' signs around the area are somewhat limited and I noted that TDC were looking into ways of improving things themselves following complaints from people appearing at the Winter Gardens about lack of local publicity so having had some initial success with positioning Margate posters on the information boards around the area put in a initial application for HDP to be considered for signage but was firmly rejected by email :- "Unfortunately guidelines for brown tourism signing stipulate that football grounds and sports and leisure centres cannot qualify for tourism signing. We appreciate that football may bring in visitors to the town, but unfortunately we must adhere to these criteria" So there you have it - no offer to perhaps have different manner of signs and I fully expect that the new hotel next to the Turner will be well signposted as TDC have an interest in getting the site developed but something that is of benefit to the community doesn't appear to interest them. I will keep pestering of course.
marksandwell
Ok so what is the procedure cost for putting up standard road signs for Margate FC??
Twist&Shout
Must be a non league thing, plenty of Prem grounds have brown signs for their grounds

michael
And lower then Prem come to think of it.. seems a good 'attempt' by dflman to me. I also think Twist and shout is correct. Maybe a better explanation of the policy is required from the council. down here in glawstershire, Forest green rovers ground is and has been for some time, very clearly direction signed with the statutory brown signs-and similar to twist and shout , i think i have seen same at other non league grounds
dflman
Ok so what is the procedure cost for putting up standard road signs for Margate FC?? working on that one seeing as there is a sign on a lamp post in Canterbury Rd pointing up Hartsdown Road to a church. Have to try to keep within what is allowed if at all possible

Have to try to keep within what is allowed if at all possible and the advice is all very wordy of course including "The tourism industry is important to the economy of Kent and although the standards can assist tourism development, sign posting is directional information and should not be used as a substitute for effective marketing" etc etc.
michael
do i interpret that, as it is a discretional decision of the local council ?

Up here there is a sign not only on the road for cars, coaches etc,but also one from the railway station as well! Perhaps someone oughtta explain that to them. By the way,is there one for your local rugby team? If there is,then questions should be asked

I will keep pestering of course You have been fed Bullsh8t quite frankly imo. look at these sites, one shows a football ground sign!!!!! http://www.followthebrownsigns.com/brown-signs/ http://www.daviesandco.co.uk/docs/articles/article8.html Its KCC you need to contact unless they have devolved responsibility to TDC I tried KCC site for info but had to reach for the neurophen in the end. Just need to get the attendance's up re all people using Hartsdown not just the spectators to get signs off a motorway or trunk road.. Should be possible. Keep pushing. Up the Gate Conf south here we come.
dflman
It is Kent County Council leading the policy made after consultation with local councils etc apparently . You can find it somewhere on the website for VisitKent - I have the links to all the relevant PDF but cannot cut and paste it until later. Will not be giving up - I never do ! margateshot
Every time we go away we should photograph every sign directing to a football club. We can then compile all the photos and then send them to TDC. Virtually every ground I have been to in league or Non league has some sort of local authority signage. What is it with TDC? it appears to employ nothing but little jobsworths. I'm sure you will see plenty around Maidstone
dflman
To be fair I have only talked with the Brown sign people at the council which section has been specifically given the task of sorting out what qualifies etc etc. No doubt normal street signs are in the domain of someone else as will be ascertained probably after Christmas. If anyone sees a brown sign, as opposed to normal ones, in our region that refers to football it would be nice to hear about it .
michael
Again-applaud the initiative dfl. Have you actually mentioned this to KP or Cliff Egan ? I may be wrong, but i anticipate that they have explored this on more than one previous occasion, either directly-or via past or current architects
Broadstairs Dave
Don't forget the Council work for us and should listen too and act on the needs of the community within the framework of the law. They have no unilateral control over interpretation than anyone else, what qualifies is always up for discussion. There is a brown sign for Football ground.
