3spirit
For me its a strange one and one that I think managers get a bit of stick from....... One on hand you can go out there are say you want to win the title for a St Neots type chairman to come along, we beat them back in Mar 12 to go top and their chairman responded by giving the manager an open chequebook to sign anyone he could to win the title (in a face to face interview!!!). How can you compete with the likes of these teams on paper, the St Neots, Truro, Dunstable etc On the other hand we have a very close knit team and I do not think we should fear anyone. Of the top sides we have made them all look average........the worrying thing for me is looking at the teams who have looked half decent against us, i.e. Marlow, Ashford, Sycob etc......are we making them look good or is it a case of them upping their game for us. I do not believe that Neil/Jon/Steve/Support should expect promotion in the first season but given this team finished 3rd last year the playoffs should be achievable What do you mean when you say this team finished 3rd? Slough this season is a new blend and it always takes time to gel. What does piss me off, though,is that it's always other teams buying success or just getting success. Fair play to Dunstable this season but they are a newly promoted side.Slough should be miles in front of them in terms of where we are at. Our chairman has backed our team over the seasons and yet we still lanquish in the Central division.Something isn't working. Not having a ground must make a difference financially but then you could argue that you have less bills to pay.I do not know. I believe that Steve Easterbrook and board made the right decision in bringing in Neil Baker and Jon Underwood to our club. They've already proved they are open to looking to promote young players. Something Steve Bateman struggled with. They have also cleaned up Slough,in view of the moaning and dissent that Slough were plagued with in SB's final three seasons[although of late we've had one or two misdemeanours]. In truth we've had to take a step backward to go forward, from where Steve Bateman left us and basically start again,in terms of comaderie and allegiance to Slough. My only slight criticism of our joint managers is maybe they've brought too many players in too fast from Godalming, hence our poor start,to add to last season's Slough squad, and thus let go of some very useful players in squad terms, when a gentler approach may have been better solution but that's easy to say from my side of the fence. and wouldn't we all be great if we had foresight and the benefit of hindsight!!! We can all understand their reasoning for bringing their trustworthy players with them to Slough. If we make the play-offs this season that is a notable success for a team which has had such an upheaval. My initial point, though,is that we MUST believe that Slough are Champions elect,to achieve success, otherwise we're always going to settle for second best. I also think we should invest in another noteworthy striker in an effort to match the Dunstables of this world.Goals win games. If we are sincere about wanting promotion this season. I don't think 'taking time to gel' caused our poor start to the season, most of the ex-Godalming players have been together for 2 or 3 seasons now. IMO the slow start to the season was due to the players taking time to adjust to coming to a new club where expectations are high and where most teams we play look upon it as their 'cup final' and raise their game accordingly. Being newly promoted doesn't always mean a lot. If you have the money to splash you have to spend it on the right players to get you promotion as Bury and St Neots did and as Dunstable seam to be doing. I think Steve Bateman had just come to the end of his little black book which consisted mainly of ex Hemel players.
Stuntman Mark
We also had a lot of injuries at the start of the season. First game we had Foulser and Osubu up front!
3spirit
I think gelling with Slough players definitely came into it,as well as the point you raised. We both agree Steve Bateman's time at the club had to end,to give Slough a better chance of promotion. We shouldn't worry what other clubs are spending/doing.We need to concentrate on getting our own house in order.

You're right Stuntman, injuries were a contributory factor along with 3spirit's point of ex Slough players having time to gel.
