Like that. Anything to get more through the gate on a cold Tuesday night

Some interesting points by the above. The same guy has done the gate for the last ten years, and he has never smiled. Albeit he is there every week and he does it voluntarily. The young family who used to sell the programs are a loss and I have spoken to the dad and asked him to reconsider their position as they are a lovely, hardworking family. The fifty-fifty seller at the moment only does this chore as the previous person had to work on some Saturdays. Must admit, she is a bit full on but you can't fault her commitment as all funds raised go towards away coaches, but everyone is entitled to say 'no thanks'. The food has been an issue for a while, the more choice, the more waste. Also, the task of producing more choice of food would be down to a small group of two people, but I will make sure there is some different food at the Margate game. I'm not sure what Michael meant when he said it feels like a league club, we took over a club that tried to be one and was left with debts of over £100,000 which has been cleared by the club.

We also want people to come to the ground and enjoy themselves because, like all the supporters, it is our hobby as well. Perhaps, at times, I have not been the jolly figurehead of the club, but at times the pressure and responsibility of the day to day fund raising and running of the club affects me personally.

I have been involved in non league football as a player, manager and chairman for 38 years and I can safely say the last three years have been the worst and least enjoyable for me, but in all the dark times, the thing that has kept me going at the club is the supporters and the people behind he scenes.

Your problem of low gates is replicated by almost every other club at our level, and yet to the best of my knowledge clubs don't seem to be working together to come up with joint ideas the solve the problem.

Out of curiosity, when you played Maidstone last week did anyone talk to their people and ask them why they thought the are attracting decent support, and you are not,  or perhaps  do an unbiased analyst on what they are doing right, or differently.

when the phrase sleeping giant is used in most cases it does not fit the club ,but maidstone only at to come home to show there standing .remember they have won the conference.i had a long chat with bill williams a director and the councils help was a smack in the face .a new ground with 4g and used by both the boroughs clubs is the way forward

Well said Colin. I have been saying for years now that the only way  to sustain a decent level of football in the borough is for the council to sell off Bridge Avenue, to finance a fit for purpose stadium for both clubs to share. I'm probably in a minority of one though as my personal preference would be for the two clubs to merge into a brand new Havering superclub.

A merger with Romford,I really couldn't see that happening, knowing what many fans think of the club.

Sorry for dragging this post up again but I have not really had a chance to get back on here since my original posting.

When I said about the club feeling more like a league club,it was with regards to a few things which I have seen in recent times.

I understand the good work the volunteers put in on match days, the good work the people running the club do with regards to getting the club debt free,it doesn't go un-noticed but at times, when you walk in through the gate it feels as if you "have" to give money.Towards the end of last season you would get through the turnstile and it would be as if everything was being forced upon you, this should be looked at,maybe strategically position things so it doesn't appear so "cluttered" at the front gate and if someone doesn't want a raffle ticket or programme that's their individual choice, they may just not have enough money. On my last visit, someone was asked if they wanted a ticket, they replied no and a comment of "will remember that" was thrown at the fan.It may well of been a joke but to many people who aren't regulars it can look a bit off.

I read various programme notes last season and the undertone in many was about how much of a struggle it is,with finding sponsors or general lack of monies at the club, all things that fans do understand, but for many, this is a mirror image of our lives, every month is a struggle for me,modern life is more expensive than the one I signed up for when I fledged the nest in the early 80s.

As put off as I have been over certain things, this thread has at least given me encouragement, along with Colin's comments that the club are willing to listen to the fans, not many clubs owners would come on a chat forum to have their say and I thank you for that.

Don't think for one minute that your work isn't appreciated by the fans,it is and greatly appreciated too.

I will be there Saturday, hoping we win and hoping to see some subtle changes due to the nature of this thread.

Always had a warm welcome at the gate.

It costs me £20 (Including a Pint) to get in and it's worth it.

Don't see it's any different at other clubs.

Best place to sell programmes and Raffle tickets.

Also if anyone still has there flag from the ESC Final please bring it along

Happy to donate half a dozen more 5ft x 3ft flags ... got the obvious ones (Red/white check,  Red/white Union flag,  Essex,  Union flag,  George Cross etc etc) but we've obviously a load of other ones in stock (been carrying Andy's Basque flag around for ages !).  All our flags are here .. http://www.madaboutflags.co.uk/

So, first 6 free, after that £2.50 each (special AFC Hornchurch discount :o) ).

Let me know.

Also, won't be at Margate Saturday (1st game we've missed this season) so someone can collect or I can drop them at the club tomorrow (Thurs) or Sat morning.

Andy.

Got my flags, it's a matter of finding the string to tie them to the fence
