Hornchurch, kicking towards the windmill end, took an early lead when Stefan Payne gained possession from a misdirected pass, weaved his way in from the left, and CARL ROOK was left with a simple tap-in from the resulting cross into the goalmouth. George Purcell almost made it two with a hard drive from outside the area which skimmed the bar, and it was Purcell again, when he moved sharply towards goal when a defender made a poor back pass, only to be narrowly beaten to the ball by Bobby Smith. Wingate temporarily eased the pressure when a well flighted Spencer McCall free kick was saved by Inigo Echepare, and it was McCall again who went close with a header from a right wing centre, but they fell further behind when Dave Rainford exchanged passes with Frankie Curley, who then slotted through to Stefan Payne, who in turn found GEORGE PURCELL who moved forward to glide the ball past Bobby Smith. Rook crashed a header against the bar from another Payne centre, whilst a long range shot from Payne went over the bar as Hornchurch continued to press. Hornchurch dominated the remainder of the half, without managing to increase their lead. A Michael Spencer free kick found Rook, whose header was saved by Smith, and a Purcell free kick rebounded off the defensive wall, where the ball was returned to Rook, whose shot was once again saved by Smith. Wingate looked more dangerous in the second half when Leon Smith came on to play up front, but they rarely threatened Echepare in the home goal. At the other end Phil Starkey made ground on the right and crossed to Purcell, whose shot was saved by Smith. Bobby Aisien was booked for a foul, and from the free kick Smith dived full length to tip the free kick from Rainford over the bar. Rook nearly found the net when he weaved past three defenders, only for his shot to elude Smith and then roll the wrong side of the post. Smith made another excellent save from a Rainford free kick, tipping the ball over the bar, but was then beaten by Curley who turned and fired in a shot from Spencer’s corner, the ball hitting the bar and then being turned around the post for another corner. STEFAN PAYNE who was prominent in both Hornchurch goals then netted the third after two defenders had failed to clear George Purcell’s cross from the right. Smith did well to save from Spencer who had ran on to a pass from Alex Bentley, and Purcell again went close with a hard volley which was saved by Smith, who had a very torrid time in the visiting goal.
