ASHFORD (Mx) SACK MANAGER

BAD GUY

Recommended Posts

I've just read from the Ashford (Mx) website that their stalwart Paul Burgess. nearly 700 appearances as a player, and then manager for 3 years, has been asked to leave his post as Manager after 10 consecutive league defeats and sitting second from bottom.

I wonder after all our forumrites previous speculation, if Gavin Bamford is the person they  already have in mind as Ashford are not considering any applications at the moment. ?

Could be interesting.  Tough job on their hands whoever it is,

There are several ex-Ashford managers and players currently in local non-League management who could be in the frame and would fit the club's usual in-house or ex-AshTree approach. There's even been a brief mention of a former Ashford manager, now retired, being a long shot. Mind you, it could be someone not connected with the club who fits the bill. Just don't put any money on Jamie Lawrence coming back!

I'm not sure the Bamfords would be first choice, as they left the club in less than cordial circumstances, moving to another local team before a seven day approach was either submitted or fully completed, and having a touch of the Kevin Pietersens when they left from what I've heard. I doubt everyone would welcome them back with open arms. At the very least, there'd be some scepticism.

You can tell from Ashford's main website that the decision to release Burgo was a very painful and unwanted last option. He played in our very first senior game (Combined Countes, home 2-0 win over Cranleigh in August 1990) and has been a magnificent servant to us over nearly a quarter of a decade. When you look at how Harrison and McGlashan, two players who shat on us, are doing in the Football League, Burgo deserved Championship status as a minimum. For what it's worth, I also think Steve Battams did a magnificent underrated job as assistant and his departure for work and family reasons left a bit of a void.
