FA Cup - Hornchurch 2 Darlington 0

What a fantastic day.

Before the game as I watched the queues of people at the turnstiles, saw the stands fill up and generally took in the whole atmosphere which was building up within the Stadium, I thought to myself that whatever the result on the pitch Hornchurch Football Club would never lose.

The enthusiasm and noise from the supporters was unbelievable and as the teams walked out onto the pitch the roar from all sides was something I have never experienced before at Hornchurch Stadium.

It was an enthusiasm which was matched by our players on the pitch and our superb defence held Darlington at bay with what seemed like astonishing ease for 90 minutes. We took the lead at an ideal time - just before half time, and it was Steve West who scored it from the penalty spot with his usual manner i.e. a rocket powered strike.

Darlington, I thought, were a little bolder in the second half and Barry Conlon had a great chance early on to bring them level when he got clear, but he blasted the ball high and wide when well placed. Vinnie John scored our second on the hour, striking home a pass to the edge of the 6 yard area from Lloyd Opara. Darlington offered very little up front for the rest of the game and did well to keep the score at 2-0 and we ended up with a well deserved victory.

Line-up:- Gay, Stirling (Rowland 74), Kerrigan, Adedeji, West, Locke, Keeling, Gooding, John (Allen 90), Opara, Graham. Subs not used:- Douglas, Southon, Collier (GK)

Excellant game, solid performance by everyone concerned.

Jon ran them ragged on the left side, supported by Danny and Jude. Westie and Vinny won everything in the air.

What a cracker of a home debut for Lloyd Opara, I was very impressed by his abilities.

If I was impartial I would have found it hard to decide who was the third division side.

Well done to everyone concerned.

  • 3 years later...

george's tactics were spot on that day...the two big stikers holding up the balls down the middle and spraying them wide for mark graham and keelo to run onto...we got behind darlo time and time again and could have scored more....same in the tranmere game to be honest...I still don't know how we lost that one...

its hard to compare the teams as borgies prem was level 2 and this years prem is level 3 so difficult to call...janney and one or two others IMO would have got into that team...
