A great result for us.

I popped down to watch Southall's game yesterday and i must say that Southall need some shooting practice in training this week.

Saturday 16th November

FA CARLSBERG VASE SECOND ROUND PROPER

2-1 Colney Heath v Newmarket Town

A report from another Forum, obviously not enough programmes printed:

Colney Heath 2 Newmarket Town 1

FA Vase Round 2

Adm £6 Did see a few people with programmes but no sign of any on sale - presumably only available to those who had emailed a random hopper to pre-announce their attendance.

After a rather lacklustre first half, in which Newmarket took the lead, the second half was a belter. Colney Heath mounted attack after attack without success, the away keeper making a couple of top drawer saves, whilst always looking susceptible to a quick counter attack. Finally, about five minutes from time CH scored and then just when extra time looked certain an excellent lob sealed the game resulting in wild celebrations and off the pitch.

The High St ground is a pleasant enough 50 minute walk from St Albans station, the first half of which is along the trackbed of the old railway line to Hatfield now converted to a cycleway/footpath. Very basic for Step 5 - not properly enclosed, proceedings fully visible from outside and the only cover an extension from the clubhouse/changing rooms over two rows of seats with flat standing behind. The front row of seats is rendered almost useless by the pitch perimeter rall at eye level. Fortunately, although there was dampness in the air, it did not actually rain as it would have been very cosy considering the above average attendance.

The longstanding GBG entry the Crooked Billet, just down from the ground, was rather disappointing with the guest beers being Doom Bar, Spitfire and something from Robinsons. Food was decent enough though, which meant I didn't try the appetising looking bacon rolls on offer at the ground.

Arriving back in St Albans (by bus) with a bit of time before my train I ventured to the Mermaid - 'must visit pub' according to the GBG. It might be must visit, but only if you have all the time in the world. Arriving in a busy pub, no bar staff were to be seen. A man then appeared, but only to wash glasses. Finally a woman emerged 'be with you in a minute sir' she said. After serving someone else she went past again - 'won't be a second'. Some time later she approached again - 'won't be long, I've just got to go and make a hot chocolate which was ordered some time ago'. Throughout this Wetherspoon's-like farce the glass washing continued at the other end of the bar. So, no drink was sampled ... and to think I swerved the Farmers Boy for this shambles.

Given Arlsey res form I thought that would be a drubbing. Fair play to them.

A draw was the fair result.

Southall were the better team but that means sod all if you cant put the ball in the back of the net ive said it before Southall need a decent striker who can put the ball in the back of the net.

I thought Arlesey Town Reserves played some good football out from the back.

Good cup tie against Sporting Hackney for us, they were a strong physical team. Game was played in a good spirit though. It was always going to be tough when our keeper was sent off for handball. Luckily with no reserve game we had a substitute keeper.

After missing a glorious opportunity to 1-0 up they went up the other end where a deflected shot looped over the sub keeper. It was quickly 2-0 following a penalty. We got it back to 2-1 and had some chances to draw level. sporting hackney then scored on the break to kill the game off.

Overall a good performance against a good side. Their captain in the midfield was a very good player.
