Hornchurch took a few minutes to settle on the pitch, extremely heavy after heavy rain during the morning, though once into their stride they threatened to overwhelm the home side. A long ball to George Purcell could have led to the first goal, but his shot beat keeper Rob Budd and flashed inches wide of the post. Purcell had another chance just a minute later when he ran on to Stefan Payne’s through ball, and again his shot rolled just inches wide of the post. And when Tambeson Eyong was brought down in full flight, it was Purcell who took the free kick, with Budd diving to tip the ball around the post, for the first of two corners, both sent over by Joey May, the last of which was well held by Budd as it dropped into a crowded goalmouth. Hornchurch maintained the pressure, and the first goal stemmed from another May corner on the left. Frankie Curley fired in a shot which was blocked, Dave Rainford followed up, and the ball was again blocked, and it rebounded out to GEORGE PURCELL who crashed it back into the net from outside the area. Until now the home side had scarcely threatened, but Hornchurch have this season rarely managed to keep a clean sheet, and today was no exception when a defensive error allowed DANNY PHILLIPS to run through and slot the ball home. Thamesmead only managed one other shot in the first half, when Inigo Echepare saved a weak attempt by Mikel Suarez, though Hornchurch began to struggle on the pitch as it cut up badly. An Eyong cross came to nothing, whilst Sam Lechmere hit a shot high over the bar. The best chance again fell to Purcell after Payne had opened up the defence, and Purcell ran forward at speed, only for keeper Budd to turn the shot around the post. There was almost a sensational start to the second half, when Hornchurch opened up the home defence within ten seconds, and Purcell’s shot was blocked on the line, and the same fate met with Joey May’s follow up shot, the ball eventually being scrambled away for a corner. For much of the remainder of the half the home goal was under siege, but a combination of erratic finishing and misplaced passes prevented what could have been a comfortable win. Joey May had a shot saved by Budd, and when May played a corner short to Payne, his shot was turned around the post by Budd for two further corners, with Curley eventually chipping the ball over the keeper but onto the roof of the net. When Payne opened up the left side and crossed to the far post, Rainford hammered the ball high over the bar, and Budd was in action shortly afterwards, diving to save a low cross from Eyong. At the other end George Monger hit a shot over the bar, after taking advantage of a misplaced pass out of defence. Purcell and Payne both had shots wide of the goal, before Leigh Bremner replaced May, Chris Bourne came on in place of Eyong, and Michael Spencer came on for Lechmere. Hornchurch continued to power forward, though the closest the came was when Purcell fired across the face of the goal. Into the final quarter and misplaced passes became the order of the day, with Alex Bentley, Spencer and Curley all finding home players. Echepare also joined in, throwing a clearance straight to an opponent, forcing Rickie Hayles into making a tackle to prevent a break through. Three minutes from time, in a match dominated by Hornchurch, Thamesmead had an opportunity to go ahead, but were thwarted by Echepare, with the save of the match, diving to turn the shot out for a corner. Hornchurch continued to overwhelm the home defence and a Bourne corner was scrambled away. Bentley played the ball back out to the right, and from the resulting cross STEFAN PAYNE netted on the stroke of 90 minutes through a packed goalmouth. In the three minutes added on for stoppages Hornchurch kept the ball at the Thamesmead end of he pitch. And deservedly took the three points. Dagger03
RRob - first goal was Purcell and the second was Payne. The video clips are now up, and I would say it is definitely Payne's goal.
