AUFC v Slough Town - Match Thread

I'm simply looking at the bigger picture, looking back at games this past week, and it's clear to me that the team is not yet the finished article, and still needs serious work before we can be considered title (or maybe even play-off) contenders.

I'm with Nathan on this. Although the side clearly shows promise, and on a couple of occasions has been very good, we are nowhere near title winners yet. This doesn't bother me as much as some as I don't think its a given that we will win every match, or that some matches should be easy.

There are some very rose coloured spectacle viewpoints posted after games. I recall after the Ashford game a number of posters saying how good a side Ashford were. If so, why are they next to bottom of the league?

There are positives, but the team is not yet good enough to be contenders for the title, at least not consistently good enough.

We are looking forward to Tuesdays game against yet another strong side in Chalfont, don't go thinking this will be easy, maybe if we give them a confidence boost they may think Slough will be an easy touch and ease off, lets hope so.

Chalfont have picked up their two league wins this season in their last three matches..... being a 2-1 win at home to Beaconsfield and a 3-2 win at Uxbridge (I think we picked up one point from those two matches!)

Someone on the Aylesbury forum summed it up perfectly 'Aylesbury deserved a point because of their character'.

Over the 90 minutes we created a lot more chances than Aylesbury but either didn't get the rub of the green, especially in the first half, or poor finishing let us down.

At 3-1 it was almost as if we thought the game was won. We dropped off far too deep and our midfield disappeared allowing Aylesbury to mount attack after attack which inevitably led to two free shots on the edge of our area resulting in one deflected goal and one goal which was a good strike.

Hopefully a lesson learnt that we really need to concentrate for the full 90 minutes.

COYR!!

Some good debate on here which is good to see. Will just add a few thoughts from me having had the chance to reflect on the game.

I found it interesting that a few people thought we dropped off too much at 3-1 (including readingrebel who I nearly always agree with on here) as we had a conversation in the changing room afterwards about this. My feeling was that we hadn't dropped off enough at this point and I think my words were "maybe we should have shut up shop at 3-1" as I actually felt we continued to push for a 4th goal at this point.

In my opinion it was only when they made it 3-2 and we took off 'Hatchet' and brought on George to strengthen the midfield that maybe we could have been accused of sitting back and inviting pressure. However this was a tactic we used when going 2-1 up vs Marlow last week and it worked well so we felt it was right to do it again. Unfortunately this time it went the other way and they managed to equalise but it's always much easier with hindsight to question whether it was the right decision or not.

My belief is that if they hadn't scored the deflected goal we would have seen the game out comfortably. It was a shot out of the blue that was going straight in to Somers hands until it took a big deflection. The old saying "goals change games" could never have been more true here as it suddenly gave them belief and they threw everything forward at us to get the equaliser.

Personally I was pleased with the overall performance. I thought we were threatening from the first minute to the last and another day we would have scored 5 or 6 goals. However 3 goals should be enough to win a game and we were left devastated that we dropped 2 points. I actually think we've been defending really well recently and as someone pointed out on here all of our defenders actually played pretty well on Saturday. We certainly don't feel we have an issue defensively but we do need to get back to keeping clean sheets if we are to keep this good run going.

Looking forward to tomorrow's game at Chalfont and hope to see some more of that great support we had on Saturday.
