surely every club wants to win every game and so must every manager I can remember playing for Camberley and Cove at Chertsey in front of some very big crowds,I think the fans crave success on the pitch and don't really care about how the books balance, just think if the boot was on the other foot and the Kettering manager was prepairing his players to go to Chertsey knowing there was gonna be a big crowd cheering on thier heroes, its not unreal it could happen if the team started winning the fans are there.

That's the problem duncs, fans rarely do care about how the books balance until it all goes wrong and then out come the buckets and those of us who don't break the bank are supposed to be sympathetic. Just look at what's happened at Farnborough (more than once) in the last few years.

Interesting view. I sat and watched with an ex referee who, rightly or wrongly, expressed radically different views to the ones stated above.

He commented on the Advantage the ref played in the centre circle that led to the move that resulted in the only goal of the game. He then gave his view of the first 'blatent' missed corner in the first half. Shot comes in, flag goes up for offside, ball goes out wide of goal. If ref thinks keeper got a touch he would have to award an indirect free kick for offside surely? He obviously didn't think the keeper touched it, so played advantage, again, and elected to allow the defending team to restart with a goal kick whcih is direct. Apparently the correct decision . We thought he may have communicated this a bit better though. The second 'blatent' corner, in the second half was the finest of touches. Our conversation was that if he had seen a touch, why would he not have given a corner and we thought that he probably didn't have a great view, and was guessing.

The final point, the disallowing of the 'equaliser' in the last few seconds is interesting. We weren't really sure what it was for, but I'm puzzled to understand what more he could have done to signal he had disallowed it? He clearly whistled, something refs rarely do when legitimate goals are scored, pointed in the direction the free kick was going, something they always do and remained in the penalty area even when all of the Chertsey players had gone back into their half. We knew he hadn't allowed the goal.

So to sum up. He did play advantage, possibly missed one, less than blatent, corner and did tell the team who thought they'd scored an equaliser that it was disallowed.

Thought E&E deserved the win but grew a little frustrated at not being able to put the game to bed. Good luck in the next round.

But there were other advantages missed when the ref could not wait to blow his whistle. Why do they not hold on for a few seconds as they are allowed to? This new tweak to the law of advantage is surely there to benefit them? When our Captain gets booked for complaining, you know that something is wrong, as he rarely goes in the book. You could also tell from both sets of player reactions that they were not happy. How then a  former referee could actually think that a good job had been done is bizarre.

For the first "corner" I understand that if an offside flag had come up (I didn't see one, or even an acknowledgement to the assistant) then a goal kick is simpler to award, although arguably a free kick for offside further up the pitch would be a more advantageous benefit to Chertsey. As for the second "corner" from where I was (behind the goal) I could see the incident and the referee was behind but in line.  He should have seen what was a fantastic save.

With the incident at the end I will agree that a whistle was blown, which kept me looking in the hope that there had been an infringement, but you only had to see the Chertsey players reaction when we took a free kick to see a lack of comunication had taken place. What would have happen had we taken the kick quickly and gone up field and scored while they were still celebrating?

I would agree with your assessment of Epsom's performance. We are playing well again, but since we got caught with a late equaliser last week, we've been a bit twitchy towards the end of games, and probably felt we deserved / needed the second goal, but seeing out two wins since that Raynes Park game will hopefully have put that concern to bed now.

Some good points E&E Rich. Suppose opininions are what the game is all about. We just felt he got the two, or three, big decisions correct, if not always communicated effectively as they could have been. Good luck for the rest of the season.
