HEMEL HEMPSTEAD  3  HORNCHURCH  2

Phil Starkey came in to the starting line up in place of Carl Rook, and Hornchurch played with a 4-4-2 formation.

Hemel Hempstead started strongly, and Inigo Echepare was soon in action, making a good save from Dave Pearce, and then turning a shot by Moussa Diarra around the post for a corner.

The home side looked quick and dangerous whenever they moved forward, but not so confident at the back. And Hornchurch almost opened the scoring when Leigh Bremner left defenders trailing with a fine run on the left, and his low cross into the middle almost resulted in a spectacular own goal when Diarra’s attempted clearance skidded inches the wrong side of the post for a corner. Joey May floated the ball over, and Elliot Styles powered in a header which was cleared off the line.

The ball was immediately booted upfield and out to the right wing, where Dave King made ground and crossed into the middle, where DAVID HUTTON scored with a well directed header. So Hornchurch found themselves one down after almost taking the lead just ten seconds earlier.

Four minutes later the scores were level. Substitute Danny May, who had replaced King, conceded a corner. Joey May played the ball short to Stefan Payne, whose shot was finished off by FRANKIE CURLEY.

Three minutes later LEWIS TOWMEY made the most of some poor defending in front of goal by planting the ball into the net, and for a time Hornchurch were forced to defend against the ever-dangerous home forwards.

As the half progressed Hornchurch came back into the match as an attacking force. Bremner won the ball in midfield and fed it neatly through to Payne, whose shot was a fraction too high and over the bar.

Then came the moment when Hemel Hempstead could easily have been reduced to ten, when Payne raced clear onto a long ball, rounded keeper Laurie Walker, and was promptly sent crashing to the ground. The referee’s decision was that it was outside the area, and that a yellow card was adequate for the offence which had prevented a possible goal for Hornchurch. Joey May took the free kick and the ball was diverted around the post for a corner.

And this then led to Hemel Hempstead’s third goal, as the corner was cleared up the field, and out to the right wing, and BEN MACKEY converted the cross.

Almost on half time Curley fired over from a Joey May corner.

George Purcell replaced Phil Starkey at half time, and Hornchurch reverted to 4-3-3.

Tambeson Eyong shot wide after a lengthy run, and the home side began to look vulnerable at the back.

Hornchurch then lost Stefan Payne, who had earlier been booked, when he handled the ball out on the left wing. After a lengthy period of deliberation the referee produced a yellow card, followed by a red.

A player down, and two goals down, Hemel Hempstead appeared certain to progress. Echepare made an excellent clearance from a corner, and Mackey then shot wide when well placed.

Jim McFarlane then introduced Sam Lechmere and Chris Bourne, for Tambeson Eyong and Michael Spencer, and the pattern of play changed markedly, as Hornchurch came forward at every opportunity, forcing the home side into some blatant time wasting.

Purcell was put clear and raced towards goal, but was thwarted by Walker who raced out of his area to kick clear.

At the other end, Echepare dived to save at the feet of Charlie Mpi, who fell to the ground in dramatic fashion, and was promptly booked by the referee, in an incident which, had the referee decided it was a foul, would have almost certainly been a penalty plus a red card for Inigo Echepare.

Purcell then sped through the home defence but hit his shot wide of the post.

Hornchurch continued to press, and Walker made an excellent diving save from a Bremner shot, the ball hitting the post before going out for a corner. Joey May sent the ball over, Sam Lechmere hit the half clearance back, and RICKIE HAYLES placed it firmly into the net.

With Hornchurch totally committed to attack, they were left open at the back, but the best Hemel Hempstead could achieve was a shot by Jordan Parkes, which went over the bar.

Into stoppage time, and keeper Walker was perhaps fortunate not to get a second yellow for time wasting, as Hornchurch came forward in a last attempt to force a replay.

The ball was played into the goalmouth and then deflected out for another corner. Every one went p for the corner, Joey May swung the ball into the middle, and Elliot Styles powered in a header which hit a defender on the goalline and was scrambled away.

Hemel Hempstead are a very good side, and are arguably the best Hornchurch have played this season. Fortune favoured them with two off-the-line clearances, and the decision to show a yellow card when the keeper brought Payne down was somewhat debateable.

Yes Hemel were everything I expected and more, but I come home thinking how proud I was of the team in the second half.

We changed our formation to a 3-4-1-2,which at the start of play I could understand, but after 10-15 mins you could tell things needed to change.

They came at us straight from the kick off and could've scored a couple before they actually did.

If we could've stayed only one goal behind at the interval,I felt we could've at the least nicked a draw.

The ref only after a bit of pressure from a couple of their players decided on showing Stefen a second yellow. Didn't have a problem with the second yellow but the first one I didn't even think was a foul.

Sam coming on gave a bit more quality down the wing and I thought George looked sharp.

We threw everything at them and got a deserved second and Joe picked out Elliot in the dying seconds but sadly for us headed it straight into the keepers arms.

So summing it up,at times we were outplayed, but we showed tremendous character to come so close at the end, very proud of my team.
