Proper English

Why can't our reporters use proper English when they report on matches?

For example, in the report on the Bishop Stortford replay, para 3 the report includes:- "Danny Steer DONE well to clear" - when it clearly should have been " Danny Steer DID well to clear [ "I did" v "I have done" =perfect and pluperfect tense]

The English language takes enough bashing from the national tabloids. Please get it right.

Is that an offer to write a proper report for us then? I'll happily let you write one for the Bromley game on Wednesday. Once it's done, email it through to me (gary@sloughtownfc.net).

Much thanks and I look forward to reading your effort on Thursday morning.

Just to let you know, kind sir, that on your line that reads

- when it clearly should have been " Danny Steer DID well to clear [ "I did" v "I have done" =perfect and pluperfect tense]

you may want to put some speech marks after the word clear otherwise your quote does not actually ever end. Here's how it should look

- when it clearly should have been " Danny Steer DID well to clear " [ "I did" v "I have done" =perfect and pluperfect tense]

Thanks for the time and effort in writing this post. Your comments have been noted (and then quickly disregarded).

Lets rigourously apply the rules of English. (and lets split an infinitive for good luck)

If GH stands for P as in hiccough

and if OUGH stands for O as in dough

and if PHTH stands for T as in phthsis

and if EIGH stands for A as in neighbour

and if TTE stands for T as in gazette

and if EAU stands for O as in plateau,

then the right way to spell potato should be GHOUGHPHTHEIGHTTEEAU

Dear My Anonymous,

I feel the need to apologise personally to you, who ever you may be, for the improper use of English in my Match report of the F.A Trophy First Round Replay that featured Slough Town and Bishop Stortford. The mistake in question appears in paragraph three, line seven of the report. Obviously this improper use of the great English Language has deeply upset and traumatised you in some way. You’ll be pleased to know that I wont be doing another match report for sloughtownfc.net until our Bryco cup match against Cheshunt a week on Wednesday. However if you think you could do a better job then please e-mail me dominic@sloughtownfc.net and I would be honoured to hand my report writing duties over to you for the night. Once again my sincere apologies .

Just for your pleasure I have listed the links to all my match reports that I have written this season, please trail through them all and get back to me on all the spelling, punctuation and grammar mistakes I have made, I am sure there will be a few!

Enjoy.

Just thought I ought to make it clear that I was not the 'Mr Anonymous' who launched this thread! <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

As Gary will confirm, I place great importance on good English, particularly correct spelling. However, there is a limit to what I can be bothered to complain about, and I have (so far) quietly ignored the numerous typos that appear in the match reports. (Life's too short!)

Nevertheless, I feel that the Official Website represents Slough Town Football Club and should be as 'professional' as possible - ie well written text, clearly presented pages, no broken links - and Gary and Chris do a darned fine job of maintaining this standard.

Having said this, it is often quite clear that the match reports are not thoroughly proof-read before they are posted on the site - I guess this is a drawback of providing a fast turn-round.

I marvel at the detail provided in the match reports, and I cannot imagine how I would go about writing one. Unlike Mr Anonymous, I am quite happy to read colloquial English in the match reports - provided it is spelt correctly and makes sense - and I would like to encourage our usual authors to keep writing!

(And Ted - loved the 'potato' post. I once saw something similar where 'fish' was shown to be spelt 'ghoti' - isn't English wonderful?)

Well said P.J<img src="/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" />

When writing a report i do read it through a few times and use spell check where i can but the odd mistake here or there is bound to slip through the net, i mean take the observer for example riddled with mistakes <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />. I can asure you Mr Anon, that myself and all the other guys that write the reports dont do it on purpose <img src="/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

I'd far rather be remembered for including a few grammatical inaccuracies in a match report than being so discourteous as to criticise others whilst hiding behind an anonymous alias. Comments like that always come from people not prepared to offer their own time but feel it necessary to criticise people like Dom who do.

I suspect Mr Anonymous was bullied at school by a girl, reports people who park illegaly outside Stag Meadow and pulls legs off spiders in his spare time.

Keep up the good work, Dom.
