Neither did Bob Gibbs-Tommy Laurence-L.Churchill-T. Reardon-D.Kemp etc etc.

Yes we know in some of those early managers there was no computers but they had 3 local papers to speak to if they wanted to say how strong the opposition were. But they didn't !

Sometimes they did say about the strong opposition!

Steve Bateman often made comments of that nature in the local papers and yes he did single out Cookham Rebel but Cookham Rebel did change his attitude to Steve Bateman and the team over time and offered positive comment when it was due.

The only people who know truly what's going on are the players and management. The rest is just perception from those on the sidelines and no one is ever fully correct. Why does every topic in here seem to evolve into this discussion...its boring and will only put the management off commenting to the supporters. I think the comments have been fair and I for one enjoy hearing the managers opinions, though I can't blame them for not wanting to part as much because of the small minority ruining it for everyone else by just constantly disagreeing.

But not every game though-which was my original point.

I'm not sure,Bakes, has said that every team is a strong side. You are saying that,Hotspur.

I think he mentioned tough games, more than strong teams, which obviously is a difference ie  Ashford.

Not the strongest team in our division currently but never a side to walkover,as our game with them proved.

Ok call it a draw, you obviously never saw what was said and you appear quite rightly his number one fan-scroll back in time to the Kettering game where we told him they were a poor side which he refuted-We rest our case!!

And roll back to Egham, where you said,

We heard Egham will be a tough nut  to crack-yes about as tough as hitting a Walnut  with a 14 pound hammer.

Which was clearly well off the mark..... sometimes it's best to take a conservative approach to avoid potentially embarrassing yourself. ;)

There's no benefit of the doubt to give with Neil and Jon. They've been open and approachable to fans, interactive and informative about the players. Their diplomatic analysis - Heaven forfend! - of future opponents doesn't mean anything to me, because it's a boilerplate response every manager uses. I know what they really think belongs in the dressing room.

So when the England manager says repeatedly we fancy our chances of qualifying for next years world cup-you think he does not mean it.

Be interesting to see if our manager says Chertsey are a strong side  when we play them.

Promoting our chances over the course of a campaign is a little different from game by game analysis. Neil and Jon have always said that their aim is promotion, but it doesn't alter the fact that this isn't easy. There's a difference between having confidence in your own players' ability and openly coming out and dismissing the opposition. Hodgson wouldn't come out and say Montenegro are a walnut about to be crush with a sledgehammer.
