Joey May placed the ball deep across the goalmouth where it was cleared upfield. May then played a through ball to Payne, whose run ended with another corner, which again was cleared. Grays struggled to get into the match as an attacking force; the best they could manage was a run by Joao Carlos, whose neat approach work came to nothing when his weakly hit shot was saved comfortably by Inigo Echepare, who had otherwise little to do in the first half. Hornchurch went ahead when Payne played the ball through the middle to Carl Rook, who touched forward to LEIGH BREMNER who ran on to glide the ball into the net. And sixty one seconds later it was the turn of STEFAN PAYNE to run through on to a long ball from Michael Spencer, and he calmly glided his shot wide of Lamar Johnson and into the net. Hornchurch kept up a relentless pressure, and could have increased their lead when May sent Payne clear, but his shot went over the bar. Grays briefly threatened when Carlos moved along the left wing and cut inside, but Hayles came back to tackle, playing the ball out for a corner, which was cleared comfortably. Payne again created an opening for himself, running through, only for Johnson to make a fine save. Grays came more into the game in the final fifteen minutes of the half but rarely threatened, though Echepare had to punch away a high centre from the right, and was again in action when he had two attempts at catching a high cross from the left. Grays started the second half in more convincing fashion. A Chuck Duru throw caused some confusion in defence, before Echepare dived to save at the feet of Duru, who had moved in from the wing. Any thoughts Grays may have had of a comeback were made more difficult when Hornchurch went further ahead. Bremner took a throw in, and Payne weaved through, to pull the back across goal, where it was cleared off the line and promptly deposited into the net by CARL ROOK. It might have been four nil had Joey May’s hard drive not cannoned back off Leigh Bremner. There was a lengthy stoppage following an incident at the far touchline, which ended with bookings for Kenny Beaney and Tambeson Eyong, the latter being promptly substituted, Chris Bourne coming on to take up a similar position on the right. Grays were struggling to keep out the constant threat from Hornchurch, and when Spencer played Payne through, he was brought down inside the area for a penalty. Lamar Johnson was booked, and Payne stepped up to take the penalty. Johnson dived to his right to push the ball onto the post, but the danger was not over, as STEFAN PAYNE, from outside the area, promptly turned to fire the ball hard into the net. George Purcell replaced Bremner, and almost found the net with a shot on the turn after Payne had made the opening, Johnson saving in fine style. Phil Starkey came on for Payne, and with Hornchurch regrouping in defence, Echepare made a good save from a hard-struck free kick. Hornchurch almost increased their lead when a misplaced clearance by Johnson gave Rook an opportunity. He promptly lobbed the keeper from thirty yards, only for the ball to bounce the wrong side of the post. Four minutes from the end, Grays pulled a goal back, after the ball had bobbled around inside the Hornchurch area, JACK WEST applying the finishing touch. Johnson made two good saves, from Rook and Purcell, and Hornchurch again came forward, and the fifth goal came in the second minute of stoppage time when GEORGE PURCELL moved in from the left, his shot being turned home by Junior Baker.
