behind-the-goal
First of all: thank all of you for being so gentle with me after last night’s mess-up regarding the comparison tables which didn’t end up being tables. I mentioned the cavalry arriving last season in the shape of Scott. We all know about his goals, his work rate and (anyone standing behind the goal will back me up on this) his desire, but what effect did he have on our defence? Here are the stats: First 18 games of the season (without Scott): conceded 43 goals (an average of 2.39 goals per game). The 13 games with Scott: 16 (an average of 1.23 goals per game). Already. That is more than 1 goal a game better. However, if we accept that it took Scott a little time to settle in and leave out the first three games, we have this stat: played 10 games / conceded 8 goals (an average of 0.8 goals per game). That begins to look like play-off form. What happened when Scott left? We played 11 games and conceded 24 goals (an average of 2.18 goals per game): almost as bad as when we started the season. So…what does this mean? It seems to me that it lends support to those on the forum arguing that we need an attacker who can hold the ball up and bring others into play, thus helping to nullify the opposition. I know that when Scott played, Liam tended to be on the bench, but I happen to think Liam is a player who has proved that he deserves to be in the team (even though he sometimes has a Berbatov air about him): the fact is that he is a natural goal scorer. Conclusion: in order to stop the opposition scoring, we need someone to help Liam up front.
andyetfc
Maybe Scott should have played in goal? Who said the following? "There're are lies, damned lies and statistics?" Statistics show that we are where we are and have more points than those teams below us and less than those above us. Let's make sure there are at least four teams below us come next April. Arthur Salisbury
That sounds like a "Yeah well, you can prove anything with facts" argument there, Andy.

MbrunoB
Funny how you can twist statistics to show what you want. Arsenal have more points after the losing only one of the first eight games of the season but won all eight of the same fixtures last season, so are they doing better or worse? OldTowner
According to the Stones web site Scott is "out of form" at the moment and Jey is due to be "pushed up" as they consider they have a better left back. Perhaps we need a few 7 dayers ?? Oh and Stones have just signed Mark Bentley - remember him ??
Steve Newing
Scott McGleish is on a contract I believe so we would need to find a transfer fee first I would assume. Think we might need a shirt sponsor first.

thecoldend
I'm not having all this talk that Scott McGleish kept us up last season etc. Granted he did make a big impact but other players played their part too. We won five games whilst he was with us...but also lost six and we did win 7 games when he wasn't at the club.
Enfield United
Well said Cold End, plus he missed a penalty v Concord when 0-0 and we went on to lose 1-0 in a game we tore them to shreads. He has'nt exactly been a revelation at Wealdstone at the moment, a good player? yes he is but I think you'll find Liam Hopes goal ratio better than Scott's after Mcgleish Left. the viewer
How you can say that Scott was not the main reason we stayed up is beyond me. I suppose as long as Steve is not blamed for anything last year then its ok with you. I can tell you that if Scott had not joined us then we would probably have got relegated and you would no longer be able to back steve to the hilt. StoneCold
So you are basically saying Scott was the reason we stayed up last season?? Who was it that managed to persuade him to join the club?? Credit where credit is due my friend.....
thecoldend
TV - I'm saying he played a part and made a big impact. He was one of the reasons we stayed up but as I said other players made huge contributions too. To say Scott kept us up is disrespectul to the other players don't you think? behind-the-goal
It was at this stage of the season last year (after 18 league games) when Scott arrived. Then we had 18 points, this season we have 12. Interestingly, we had just shipped 6 goals (against Whitehawk), as we did today, and had conceded 13 goals in 3 games (0-4, 1-3 and 0-6) just as we have recently done this season (0-3, 3-4 and 1-6). The cavalry had better make an appearance soon. By the way, Scott has scored 7 goals in his last 5 league games for Wealdstone.
