HORNCHURCH  2  CARSHALTON ATHLETIC  1

A strong wind made conditions at times difficult and both teams took time to settle. Carshalton won an early corner and the ball travelled unheeded across the goal.

Play was largely confined to midfield until Hornchurch opened the scoring on eleven minutes, when Stefan Payne won a high ball, which he headed on to Tambeson Eyong, who ran the ball to the goalline before crossing into the middle for CARL ROOK to convert.

Inigo Echepare then held a high cross from the left, before Eyong set up Frankie Curley, whose shot was well held by Dean Snedker.

Eyong again made the opening for Rook, who this time headed over the bar, and three minutes later Rickie Hayles played a long ball in towards Payne, whose shot curved wide of the post.

Carshalton drew level when a cross from the left was not cut out by Elliot Styles, and ALEX ADDAI fired home.

Play was confined to midfield, and chances were few. Joey May went close when he met a cross from Eyong, and, in what was a rare visiting sortie, Tommy Bradford ran forward but hit his shot wide.

Hornchurch had a scare shortly after half time when Styles was penalised and Luke Ogden’s well struck free kick, from 35 yards out, cannoned off the wall of defenders for a corner.

Payne then combined well with Chris Bourne who won a corner. May curled the ball over towards goal where Snedker rose well to catch.

Pelayo Gomez-Pico had an excellent chance to give Carshalton the lead when he ran through the middle, but Alex Bentley moved across to tackle and the ball was safely gathered by Echepare.

Leigh Bremner came on for his home debut in place of Chris Bourne, and Hornchurch switched to having three players up front.

Hornchurch almost regained the lead after Payne was fouled, and May’s well-flighted free kick found Rook, whose header was well saved by Snedker. Michael Spencer then sent over a good cross, which reached Rook, whose header was wide of the post.

Hornchurch went ahead when May played a long ball to Rook, who directed it low into the middle, where STEFAN PAYNE sidestepped a defender, and calmly glided his shot wide of Snedker and into the net.

Rook fired high over the bar, and Payne went closer with a similar shot, before Bremner weaved this way through only for his shot to be saved by Snedker.

Billy Coyne replaced Rook and George Purcell came on for Payne, though the only chance in the final few minutes fell to Spencer, whose shot was wide.

Five minutes were added on for stoppages, and Hornchurch comfortably kept the ball in the Carshalton half of the pitch to earn the three points.
