SPALDING UTD  1  HORNCHURCH  4

Hornchurch took time to settle on a hard and bumpy pitch, and the ball being affected by the strong wind which swept downfield, and at times in the first half conceded midfield possession to the home side.

Keeper Michael Duggan was quickly in action when he rose to punch away a Joey May corner, but it was Spalding who had the first goalscoring chance of the day, when Elliot Styles was caught in possession by Sam Mullarkey, whose shot was well saved by Inigo Echepare.

Carl Rook almost gave Hornchurch an early lead when he met a Chris Bourne centre from the left, but his header was over the bar.

Frankie Curley displeased the referee with a midfield tackle on Dan Cotton and incurred Hornchurch’s only yellow card of the match.

Hornchurch had a good chance to take the lead when Alex Bentley sent Tambeson Eyong away on the right. Tambeson moved inside, rounded two defenders, only for his low cross to go across the goalmouth, with no one able to get a touch.

And a minute later it was Eyong again, leaving defenders stranded as he homed in from the right, only for his shot to hit the side netting.

Spalding looked dangerous when they came forward and should have taken the lead when Mullarkey played a good through pass to Cotton, but his shot was under hit and was saved comfortably by Inigo.

Mullarkey then missed the best chance of the half when he received the ball on the edge of the area, but hit his shot over the bar.

Hornchurch took the lead when Stefan Payne weaved through several defenders, then placed the ball into the middle for CARL ROOK to finish.

The Hornchurch defence was seemingly wide open when Mullarkey touched the ball to Andy Tidswell, but Eyong had antedated the danger and came back to tackle; he then set off on a lengthy run upfield and was eventually tackled by Adam Jackson, who was rewarded with the second yellow card of the day.

Spalding tried hard to draw level, and Inigo came to the rescue with an excellent save from Cotton.

Almost on half time, a Michael Spencer cross was tipped over the bar by Michael Duggan.

Although Hornchurch had at times struggled to find their usual rhythm, their second half performance, playing with the strong wind and kicking towards the club house end of the ground, was much more composed, and, after an early corner from Lee Beeson was headed away by Rickie Hayles, Hornchurch quickly took control.

Spalding lost Jonny Allen with an injury, and he was replaced by Lee Canoville.

Hornchurch were now forcing he pace, with Chris Bourne and Tambeson Eyong creating openings along both wings. And it was from the left wing where the second goal originated, when Stefan Payne gained possession, touched back to Chris Bourne, who floated the ball into the goalmouth for CARL ROOK to glance home.

Spalding soon conceded a third goal, and it was CARL ROOK once again, this time converting a penalty following a hand ball from Bourne’s centre by Dan Cotton.

This was Rook’s last involvement in the action, as he was immediately replaced by Lee Bremner.

Perhaps Hornchurch, with a comfortable lead, relaxed too much, for Spalding replied with a goal from ANDY TIDSWELL, who scored with a spectacular shot from outside the area.

Sam Lechmere and Ade Yusuff replaced Payne and Bourne, and Hornchurch now had a completely different forward line for the final part of the match.

ADE YUSUFF usually waits until deep into stoppage time to score, but decided to get onto the scorers’ list a bit earlier than usual, when he finished off some excellent approach work by Tambeson Eyong, the ball hitting both posts before crossing the line, to the very obvious delight of both the scorer and the large contingent of away followers behind the goal.

Spalding almost pulled a goal back in the final few seconds, when a long-range shot cannoned back off the post into the arms of Inigo.

A very nice touch at the end was that the match sponsors announced two players of the match awards, one to Sam Mullarkey of Spalding, and the other to Carl Rook of Hornchurch.
