REFEREEEEEEE

Recommended Posts

On the whole its been slightly better so far but there have been one or two poorly officiated games, the ref on saturday was poor, told the players in the corridor that football is a contact sport so not to come whinging then soon as the game started he blew up for pretty much everything.

The ref for our FA Cup tie was very poor dont you think. Both managers agreed on that.

Personally, I've noticed a lot more younger refs and assistants and I've yet to have a really bad one and if I'm honest I've actually had some of the better linos I've ever had.

Remind me.

Have I been to any of your games so far this season?

Yeah, the ref and 2 linos in the FA cup replay v codicote were very good IMO. Had another good young Lino sat v kings Langley. There have been more but can't remember the specific games.

The younger refs seem to be a bit more accommodating letting the players talk to them and are explaining their descions (and mistakes). Also helps that they are able to keep up with play rather than ref'ing a game from the centre circle.

Referee we had Saturday was excellent. Fairly young and spoke to the players from both sides and was seen smiling alot which the players liked as they could speak to him. You know how ours can whinge.

All the yellow's were correct plus the red for our oponnents.

Has he passed his fitness test to serve on the SSML  :P

Graham was reffing on the West Herts League the season after he retired from the Premiership but (according to a very reliable source) was asked by the FA to stop due to his media work being a potential conflict to refereeing standards! Seems rather petty to me as he was quite happy to be doing local football.

He did one of our pre season games nearly every year whilst he was on the Prem list & his first game after his famous 3 yellow yards in the World Cup was a Tring Athletic friendly

I've only seen 2 poor performances this season. One by a Referee and another by an Assistant Referee.

Generally, the standard has been good so far.

Pete,

what's the feedback like to officials where clubs give very differing marks. I know of one game where the marks differed by 28 marks between the 2 clubs this season ? How does it work for officials - is it just a quiet chat from Mr Ewen ? Clearly it's different where the game is assessed, but what happens on a non assessed game and the clubs have wildly differing view of the officiating ?

You will get the odd game where two people watching the same game will have different views and a huge discrepancy like you have shown can happen. Generally, the Referees who average the highest marks over the Assessing Year tend to have the better marks from the Clubs as well.

I prefer to line on the SSML so I have no idea if Mr Ewen speaks to Clubs or Referees regarding their marks of the Referee.

The Assessors will also write a Development Form for the Assistant Referees which will include a mark. My last two marks show a big discrepancy. In my opinion, one mark was too high and the other too low so it's not just Clubs who mark erratically at times.

I should point out that the Referees in the Premier Division are Level 4's so will be Assessed and marked by Assessors as well as Clubs.

Assistant Referees will be marked by the Referee  plus Assessors if they are on their game.

A Referee outside of the Premier Division will be marked by the Clubs only.

All these marks are collated and once the averages are worked out they are turned into bandings (A - E).

If a Level 4 finishes A - A (Band A for Assessors marks and Band A for Club marks) then it is very likely that he or she will be promoted by the FA to Level 3.

Finish E - E as a Level 4 then you are in trouble!

Tables are also kept for the other Referees, Level 5 and Level 6 who do middles plus Assistant Referees at Level 5, 6 and 7.

You can ask for your marks and finishing position at the end of the season.

As you can see, marks from Assessors and Clubs can make or break a Referee.

Some prefer not to reveal their marks or position others are not bothered who knows.
