A car was sent out to rescue them, and everyone arrived in time. For Hornchurch followers it was a different scenario – miles of traffic cones from the A13, with the last three miles to the ground giving a good impression of a go-kart track, as you weaved in and out of the cones. The teams came out to an eerie silence – no music, no noise, and no announcements until a few seconds before the kick off. After the somewhat lack-lustre performance in the first match, Hornchurch quickly took command. Michael Spencer started at right back, but within a few minutes had switched to the left wing, where he made a telling run, forcing Darren Behcet to turn his dangerous centre over the bar. Chris Bourne took the corner and Steve Sheehan headed clear. Hornchurch almost took the lead when Stefan Payne gained possession and fired in a hard drive from outside the area, the ball rising a fraction too high and clearing the bar. East Thurrock caused some concern with their first sortie into the Hornchurch half when Nathan Koranteng crossed the ball into the goalmouth, where Inigo Echepare tipped it over the bar, though the corner came to nothing. Payne was causing confusion in the home defence whenever he was within shooting range, and Behcet did well to turn a Payne shot over the bar as Hornchurch pressed strongly. Inigo made another fine save, diving to turn a snap shot around the post, but Hornchurch continued to surge forward, and when Bourne left defenders trailing on the wing, his cross found Spencer, whose shot cannoned back off a defender. Payne then opened up the defence on the left, playing the ball across goal, where Carl Rook just failed to get a touch. The opening goal arrived when MICHAEL SPENCER made a solo run from the left and finished his run with a crashing shot into the net. Spencer then combined with Bourne to cross for Joey May, whose shot was deflected around the post for a corner, and a minute later Elliot Styles exchanged passes with Payne, who slotted through to Bourne, whose goal bound shot was saved in fine style by Behcet. After Lea Dawson had briefly threatened, Payne gained possession, ran forward, rounded Behcet, only for his shot to be cleared off the line. With Hornchurch so much in control it was something of a surprise when the home side equalised. Following a free kick conceded by Phil Starkey out on the left, the ball was played into the goalmouth, and LEON McKENZIE headed home. Hornchurch continued to press, and had a chance to go ahead again when Rook opened up a path for May, but his shot was too high and over the bar. Level at half time, when they could have been three or more up, Hornchurch continued to dominate, and Payne almost regained the lead with a fine run, only for the ball to be scrambled off the line. Rook was brought down as he surged forward, but May’s free kick was directed wide of the post. Payne again threatened but was thwarted when Behcet raced out of his area to kick clear. Hornchurch finally got their reward when Payne passed to CHRIS BOURNE who homed in on goal and fired the ball hard into the net, Behcet getting a hand to the shot en route. Behcet made an excellent save from Payne, who had run through to a Rook defence-splitting pass, and Spencer fired wide when well positioned shortly afterwards. Payne again went close, and Billy Coyne and Derek Duncan replaced May and Spencer. East Thurrock then threw players forward, and for the next fifteen minutes there was at times a prolonged siege on the Hornchurch goal, with Inigo making two fine saves, and another shot being deflected onto the crossbar. Ryan Sammons made over forty yards unchallenged, but his shot was directed several yards wide of the post, in what proved to be the final attacking move by the home side. Hornchurch introduced Ade Yusuff for Stefan Payne, who had run himself almost to a standstill, and the four minutes of stoppage time was spent mainly in the East Thurrock half of the pitch. Dagger03
This was Darren Behcet's last match for ETU, as he has now been released. No idea why, as he had an excellent match last night.

Wivenhoe Urchin
I thought Darren Behcet played very well. He made a great save to keep them in the game second half and nearly kept out our second goal.
