HORNCHURCH  1  WEALDSTONE  1

With light rain falling intermittently for most of the match, conditions were difficult on a slippery surface.

Hornchurch, kicking towards the windmill end, made the first attacking move of the match, Chris Bourne making ground on the right, and visiting keeper Jonathan North made a good save to keep the ball out of the goal.

Elliot Styles cleared after a cross had bobbled around in the Hornchurch goalmouth, before a long throw from Billy Coyne gave George Purcell as shooting chance, and North did well to keep the ball out of the goal.

Wealdstone took the lead on nine minutes when a cross from the right reached CHRIS MOORE, who controlled the ball well before turning and firing into the net.

Hornchurch had a chance to level the score when Stefan Payne sped through the defence, and with defenders closing in, he fired in a right-footed shot, which went narrowly over the bar.

Hornchurch were unfortunate not to score when a Coyne cross was headed powerfully by Purcell, and the ball was cleared off the line for a corner, which Derek Duncan swung over a fraction too close to North, who punched clear.

Styles was booked when he conceded a free kick in a dangerous position just outside the area, and the ball cannoned to safety off the defensive wall.

Wealdstone defended in depth, and a Duncan corner was scrambled off the line for a follow up corner, which was played short and was comfortably cleared. A similar fate met a Hornchurch free kick from the left wing, when a short pass went wrong.

Billy Coyne sent over a series of dangerous crosses, and went close with a shot from long range, which went wide of the post.

Joey May replaced Coyne at half time and Phil Starkey moved to right back, May playing in midfield.

Wealdstone almost went further ahead with a shot, which Inigo Echepare turned around the post in what was the save of the match. Styles completed the clearance by heading the corner powerfully up the field.

Scott McGleish was booked for a bad tackle on Ricky Hayles, and Hornchurch were again close to scoring when Starkey’s cross found Stefan Payne, whose shot was deflected wide for a corner.

A Duncan shot likewise was deflected for a corner as Hornchurch piled on the pressure, whilst the visitors looked dangerous when they were able to break out of defence.

Manager Jim McFarlane had already sent on Ade Yusuff for Chris Bourne, and added another forward the attack when Carl Rook came on for Styles, Frankie Curley taking over as captain.

Hornchurch could have conceded a goal when an Inigo clearance was charged down by McGleish, but Inigo reacted quickly to gather the loose ball.

Inigo was again in action when a dipping cross from the left almost eluded him, but he was able to punch the ball out and Alex Bentley completed the clearance.

Keeper North was twice fortunate to be awarded a free kick when on both occasions he appeared to drop the ball, and Orlando Rodrigues was booked for time wasting, as the delaying tactics of the visitors annoyed the home following.

Only four minutes stoppages were indicated, and it seemed that Wealdstone would hold out, their defence repeated booting the ball up field, and almost as frequently out of the ground.

In the final few seconds of stoppage time, Inigo pumped the ball deep out to the left, where Payne weaved through the defence, before crossing into the middle, where the ball was only half cleared, as far as ADE YUSUFF, who promptly fired in back into the net for a deserved equaliser.
