Canvey Island vs Enfield Town

A dull and unenergetic performance. We missed our influential and missing players and didn't have the players to come in in for them. We looked toothless going forward.

O'Brien and Johnstone just not good enough - agreed Johnstone off the pace and O'Brien like a headless chicken. Which brings me on to Bardle - I hate to refer back to previous threads but just not good enough - what was he doing for the penalty??? Why didn't Steens play?

Is Kirby fit for Tuesday?

When will we keep a clean sheet???

You lads lost this match in the first half, an oxymoron I know as the score was 0-0 at H-T, but ETFC didn't get one shot on target (or an attempt of note) when playing with a strong wind at your backs, plus Canvey had a 17 year old in goals that should have been tested from distance.

There was indeed some poor performances from a few players and it was a very poor penalty to give away. The Canvey second was a freak goal but 2-0 at the time was about right. In saying that, you were unlucky not to nick a point at the death. As Half Man Half Biscuit say...Thems The Vagaries.

We all know as Steve has told us many times before that players only get remunerated if they are in the 16. To expect us to be able to get a squad of 22 who are nearly all as good as each other considering the above is not realistic. Yesterday missing were Kirby injured , Ewang injured , Hope suspended and Stevens work . Plus Matt Turpin who is awaiting a scan for a possible hernia. There are five players who may or may not make up our strongest XI , depending on opinions. Too many players put in individual performances yesterday that weren't good enough nor at the level that they can play at. I would expect changes to be made on Tuesday , depending on who is available for selection

Comeon,

....depending on who is available for selection.

Is this not the basic problem ?

It does not matter as the squad quality is not up to this level.

Chris Wild apart, where has the squad improved from last season ?

Some would say we have stood still, which actually means we have gone backwards.

Sorry to have to bring this up again, but we have been told there are two players for every position! So where are they?

Steph. I wasn't at the game but that has nothing to do with my comment. If players aren't good enough, and we have little in strength in depth, then they need to start working harder on improving their game so they can step up.

Old Towner , the point is top quality costs money the club doesn't have. Rumour has it John Frendo at St Albans who we will come up against next week is on money that is over a quarter of Steve's budget per week. I know Steve has tried to get him to the club in the past . It is a simple fact more money usually means you get get better players. That applies to all levels of football . Why is it every time we get beat we all moan about the same things. Find another £1000 per week for the budget and then you might expect us to be a play off side. Anyone got a spare £38k to cover that for the season. You can see the players we have are inconsistent at this level , one week good another week average or poor. I'm sure Steve will look to improve us where he can

We ca argue at budget all day and I agree with you Comeon. However, I think we are all in agreement Vhris Wild is a good addition yet the fact remains we are still yet to produce a clean sheet. Is this down to the back 4/GK - perhaps? What does the team train on? Do they work on defending as a team?

Yes, Obviously money would make a difference, so as a supporters run club what shall we do ?

Forget it ? Call it a day ?

Ask Tony L to re-invest and buy us out ?

Ask supporters to invest more than they do already ? Perhaps they would if it was an entertaining winning team.

All a bit chicken and egg !!

We were going to have a bigger, stronger, fitter squad this year. Have we ?

We were going to be stronger at the back - 2 goals per game suggests not yet.

We were going to have 2 players per position - have we ?

We do have 26 players signed ( rather than 22 mentioned pre-season ) or has Dean P left making 25.

Of the 25 Dean G is at Potters Bar ( scoring goals ).

Why have Hahn, Matata and Johnston been signed ? Are these players good enough at this level ?

Reduce the squad to 20 and spend the saved money on 2 decent players.

Would Alex Reed be interested in Premier football rather than Harlow ? ( 12 goals so far )

Can we pay more that Harlow or similar ?

All about opinions, but Town are in the entertainment business where winning counts and then ( and only then ) will more people attend games and help with Cash flow.

Butler's Bar and pints of beer won't help the finances to the tune of an EXTRA £38,000 quoted as a minimum requirement.

We are up there in supporter numbers and must take more away that most other Clubs, but already supporters are unhappy and more importantly, concerned about THEIR Club.

We moan about the same things as they keep happening.

Just read the forum.

Not a rant.....just a view from the terrace.

From what I understand from reading this thread, our players are only paid when they're involved in the matchday 16, so reducing the squad to 22 from 26 I don't think would make much different to the finances. As far as I know, we don't have players on contract, and we don't pay weekly wages / money to players. I would imagine that it's a difficult balance to keep a big enough squad to cover injuries/suspensions whilst keeping players at the club when they're not playing (maybe why Green is getting match time at PBT).

As has already been mentioned, we can't throw money around like other clubs can at this level, so we have to make steady progress, adding players to the squad who want to play for Enfield Town, rather than players who just want to move from club to club, going where the money is. With that in mind, I'd say that it's maybe a five year project to see us competing at the right end of the league, rather than looking over our shoulders (I wish this wasn't the case, but it's the reality). In in our short history, we’ve only really experienced promotion pushes up until last season (ESL, Southern and Ryman Div1 North), so perhaps expectations can sometimes be unrealistically high.

Clearly some of our performances this season haven't been good enough, although we have been a little unlucky at times and shot ourselves in the foot at other times with our poor finishing and going to sleep defensively. Ignoring McGleish, who I don't think was really a Town player as such; I’d say that we do look marginally stronger this season compared to last (only the points tally / league position at the end of the season will prove me right or wrong). Adding one or two players of Chris Wild’s quality every season for the next 3 or 4 years can only see us moving in the right direction. I’d much rather do this with players who think that playing for Enfield Town is important as well as the money they’re getting.

So long as Steve, the coaches and the players accept that performances like Saturday aren’t good enough, and are working hard to put it right, then I don’t think we can ask for much more.
