AFC Dunstable 1 AFC Rushden and Diamonds 1 aet (FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round)

Admission £7 prog.£1 Att. 250 est.

AFC Dunstable are the 5th different team I have seen play home games at Creasey Park or Creasey Park Community Football Centre as it is now known.

The ground has totally changed, the nice old stand has gone as has the covered accommodation opposite. There is just a small modern stand on the opposite side to the old stand and a small bit of cover behind the goal.

The clubhouse has gone too, replaced by a new one. There is an argument that this could constitute a new ground. I'm not sure if the pitch is in the exact same position or not.

To get there I got the train to Leighton Buzzard station and caught a no.70 bus from there to Dunstable.

Both teams have had a good start to their seasons so a close match was to be expected and this is what happened. The first 30 minutes were to be frank, quite dull. Then out of nothing the excellent Francis gave AFC the lead and it was game on. Early in the second half Dunkley equalised for the Diamonds. After that there were many chances for both sides to win it, but the final result was a fair one.

I was sat just behind the Radio Diamonds commentator who broadcasted the whole game live. Possibly the only 1st qualifying game to get this treatment. He even gave latest scores from other non-league games, but unfortunately not Northampton Spencer's Vase game.

Well over half the crowd were from Diamonds, but they lacked the arrogance that supporters of these reformed teams often have. There were no chants of 'Shit ground, no fans' for instance.

Great game at London Colney yesterday...

The Cod went 2 nil up but a very offside looking goal got LC back in it...once they were back level there only looked like one side would win.

Against the run of play Cod scored in the first half of ET..this all proved to much for the LC manager who lost it with his players at half time in ET...he left the pitch and started walking out of the ground!

All in all good value for money on non league day...

Ok maybe not £7 but no too far off! You can get tickets for around a £10 in conf and some league 2 clubs (the crap ones mind you). You can get in to Luton games for about that. Also carling cup games at the Emirates are a tenner so league games at Barton or Afc for £7 are abit high surely.

Probably why my old man used to turn up with 20mins gone to all my games so he never had to pay to get in. (That, and embarrassment)

I remember paying £8 to watch Aylesbury united in 2000. £12 to watch Aldershot in Ryman Prem 2003(?) v Morecambe, great game 3-3 Adam Miller was class above everyone he went to QPR not long after. Edited by Winslow Boy

Yeah most of those prices are pre ordered tickets I'm sure, Got mates that go Luton and they defo don't pay £18 every week.

My original point still stands, despite the prices of L2 & conf, I understand clubs at 'our level' need to make money but anything over a fiver is too much in my opinion. And prob y attendances are poor.

So embarrassing doing the champions league type line up and hand shake when uv got 7 people in the stand.

Great 1st Team Performance v Rushden&Diamonds

AFC Dunstable 1 AFC Rushden & Diamonds 1 (AET)

MATCH REPORTS

AFC will need to replay their FA Carlsberg Vase tie against AFC Rushden & Diamonds after the two sides could not be separated after 120 minutes at Creasey Park on Saturday afternoon.

After a shakey first 5 AFC grew into the game and started to dominate the midfield. The hosts had the tall, pacey Chris Francis up-front, and after 30 minutes he shrugged off the challenge of Alex Deakin as he burst through the centre of the Diamonds defence before firing low into the left side of goal. A further good home chance fell to Richard Harker after a cross from the right cleared everyone but he fired just over.

Half-Time: AFC Dunstable 1 AFC Rushden & Diamonds 0

If the first half AFC had slightly the better of affairs, with attractive football from both sides but it was the Diamonds who dominated the second period. Matt Gearing had an early chance after good work from Dunkley and Taylor, but saw his shot blocked. Fazel Koriya took a free kick from near the left touchline, and it was straight on the head of Russ Dunkley whose neat back header looped into the net for a deserved equaliser.

Immediately after Chris Francis then had a great opportunity to put AFC back in front when he put wide when clean thru.

Koriya for Rushden also created a great chance for fellow substitute Aaron King after the two had combined, but King curled a shot to the right of the goal. Late chances fell to Taylor and Koriya to settle the tie, but after 90 minutes the scores finished level.

Full-Time: AFC Dunstable 1 AFC Rushden & Diamonds 1

After the Diamonds had looked the most likely to get the winner in the 2nd half, it was the hosts who had much the better of extra-time. The first 15 minute period was rather quiet, although Tom Cross did well to smother a Chris Francis effort after the home striker found space for a shot. For the second period the Diamonds brought on Séan McBride and switched to a 4-3-3 formation, but the result was that the Diamonds lost their shape, with several players visibly tiring unlike their counterparts in blue.

A break down the right involving Chris Francis and Courtney Massey saw a great chance for George Higley with his first touch, but somehow he shot wide with the goal gaping. Jonathan Barnet also went close, before AFC's Craig Butler missed a chance when clean thru, and then tghe same player had a good penalty shout turned down, but referee Matt Filipiak waved away their claims, and then brought the game to a conclusion shortly afterwards.

After Extra Time: AFC Dunstable 1 AFC Rushden & Diamonds 1

Most step 5 clubs charge £6 i would say.

At Hanwell Town FC we charge £6 which includes a programme.

At Welwyn Garden City we have the better answer. £5 entrance includes the programme. Join the Club for £10 and you get in for £2.50, including the programme.

And, we have a good team, a decent club house with beers and hot food, parking and a friendly atmosphere.

Longer term strategy, perhaps. The right one? Absolutely.

Defo. Like that.

The issue we have at Crawley is that we use Bartons ground, so make money ONLY from gate receipts.

If/when we develop the Crawley Green site attendances will be so much better with the club house busy throughout the day and night. Hope they're able to keep the entrance fees down. Families especially kids are the future of coarse.
