FA Cup v Cirencester (a)

Recommended Posts

Maybe I was wearing my rose-tinted glasses last night but I actually thought we were the better side and felt aggrieved we didn't come away with a win.... I don't recall Jake Somerville having to make any saves, and yet we rattled the post and forced their keeper to make a few good saves.

Their goal seemed to come from a defensive error, a free header very soon after Wes Harrison had to go off injured.

Considering we had no Foulser, Hollis, Warren Harris, Short and Lake (presumably although he was on the bench he is injured, as I would have expected him to have been the natural replacement for Wes), it was a in my opinion a reasonable performance.

I do think our central midfield pairings at present do not get in support of the forwards enough, and would like to see Smith, Scott Harris and Dyer all in the starting line up..... has Dyer ever played in an attacking midfield role?

There was more excitement in the motorway café than at the game.Must not use injuries as an excuse not to field best team( surely that is why we have a squad of 18 )wasn't it Cloughie who said when the team is winning the treatment table becomes redundant?

The other thing that amazes me is all this talk of a lesser budget-what happened to all those thousands from last years cup run?

I agree with some of the above posts we seem more likely to be fighting relegation than promotion!

So if players are injured you can still play your best team???

About as nonsensical as some of Cloughies egotistical sayings.

As for last years 'thousands' probably gone to repay a 'tiny fraction' of what Steve has had to pay out over the years.

For someone who recall's what happened in the motorway cafe, you have made no reference to the huge traffic holdup just outside town that all of us coming from London direction had to encounter, I suppose you know another short cut or maybe you arrived by helicopter or heaven forbid you did'nt even go, but then with you being Slough's No1 fan I'm obviosly wrong.

No need to apologise Sue, I can take it from people I know.  We all see things differently, and as I said it was my first look at this team.  I have also seen a heck of a lot worse from some of our so called better sides.  Agreed the game could have gone either way, and it that respect may have been exciting, BUT the football on offer from both teams was in my opinion abysmal for the league levels we are both in.  That is not knocking the team, just stating my opinion.  I do not think I slagged off team last night at all, in fact I was swearing at one old timer who was calling for the management to go!!

" Oh and Hotspur, you can always stay in the motorway cafe, I am sure most people on here would be quite happy with that".

Actually it was more realistic on the way back-someone had the radio on loud in the services-and it was playing the Rolling Stones's ITS ALL OVER NOW !

Good glad thats settled then, so there will be no need for you to come to any more games or post on here, your sort of negative support is not wanted.

Now moving on, No worries Grandad  I know you are not the spiteful type, just didnt agree with you thats all. Nice to see you again.

Having been to more Slough games than you have-we wont be stopping going on your or any other persons say so.Just because you are not honest enough to say when the team play badly or are not good enough does not mean we have to be the same.Even park players get criticised from time to time ( and they don't get paid ).As I have always said which many of you choose to ignore if you pay to watch you are entitled to be critical where warranted.Last season I WAS CRITICAL OF Mr Bateman and was like a lot on here pleased to see him go-have to admit maybe it was a bit hasty!

I think we've played some of our best stuff when we've got the ball into Dyer and Harris below head height. They are strong and hold off their defenders well and do link up the play nicely giving the midfielders chance to get up the pitch and get involved. Far too often last night the ball was too far in the air above them and whilst they do win a decent percentage of their headers, we struggled to generate anything from them. During the good spell we had in the second half, we got the ball down and got it into Wheeler quickly enough, but just couldn't find the target when the ball came into the middle. I think there was only one save of note Garner made, from Harris, with a low drive in towards the near post which I think may have been heading wide. Aside from that, we didn't hit the target with a challenging shot, but as has been said, neither did they. A few close shots and across the face of goal attempts, but can't recall Sommers having a save to make.

I like McClurg's energy in midfield and would like to see us pressing as a unit with him. Feels like he's often applying pressure to the ball in isolation yet it is easy to pass around him and get beyond the midfield in the middle of the park. I do wonder if a 4-2-3-1 would suit us with two holding midfielders to try and give the others a bit more attacking freedom, although I don't think we're far off playing this anyway with the two wingers pushed well forwards.

It's disappointing, but its early days. Having a settled side will help, particularly at the back and I've every faith in Neil and Jon to get it right and get us right up the table.

I was with your two managers tonight who were obviously watching us at the Beaconsfield v Crows match. I have to say after talking to them, some of the critism is totally unwarranted. They do have key injury concerns to worry about, they have brought a side together that want to play, rather than some of the money grabbing individuals that you had there before.

Don't forget Hotspur or whatever your name is, you had a massive outlay on players last season and Bakes and Unders have brought their players in for not a lot more than they were on at Godalming, which was considerably less than what Slough were offering last year. They have shipped out a lot of deadwood from the club and for that they deserve credit and time. Talking to them tonight they are still hurting about Cirencester and other results but the season is long and there are still so many points up for grabs. Don't forget that they finished higher than you last season, you don't do that with bad players or bad managers. This is from an oppo fan too.

I wish you all the very best for the season after the way we were looked after and how friendships have been formed (apart from our two games) but attacking the management team, you must be on some seriously wicked stuff? I truly hope by the end of the season that Bakes and Unders can stuff your critism down your throat with promotion (behind us of course)

For those that either hadn't noticed or have chosen to ignore it, Cirencester won at Banbury (from the Premier) 2-1 in the next round of the FA Cup..... looks like they might be a much better side than many on here gave them credit for, and with a home tie against AFC Porchester in the 2nd Qualifying round it looks like they could progress further.

Well,Curtis, the Cirencester team I saw play Slough, were beatable and offered little in the way of passing football. However FA Cup games throw up all sorts of baffling results.I mean who would have thought Mansfield would win the Conference after Slough's memorable games last season against them.

Royston Jez,the Cirencester game is a distant memory now and most of the Slough fans have put this game firmly out of mind. Slough have just achieved a notable win at Rugby and we are all looking forward rather than back.

The majority of Slough fans will give Bakes and Unders credit and the time to prove they have got what it takes,to get our beloved team out of this division.

So far we've experienced some teething problems from the new look squad. This happens to all teams when they re-build.The fans and the new management team have to have patience with each other.

Unfortunately, for Bakes and Unders, the vast majority of Slough supporters have high and lofty ambitions and expectations for Slough Town FC,given the history of the club in non-league football. Some of these are realistic aims and some are probably not!

Individual games are always going to be scrutinised by our passionate fans, regardless of wins, draws or losses,on this forum.

The management will need to get used to criticism when things don't go well but will also get the plaudits and accolades when things do go well.

Barton and Ashford home games are important games for us now but not the be all/end all, and I'm just hoping we can get,at least 4 points from them.

As we all know football is far from predictable.

If only that were the case.... I'm fairly new to reading this forum, but it was rampant with criticism a couple of weeks ago, and has gone deathly quiet since a cracking 4-0 away win at Rugby!

Welcome to our forum,Curtis,if no one has said it already.

I disagree about your last point. I think plenty of people have been positive about the Rugby game. I also think after the hullabaloo of the FA Cup exit, and the managers taking umbrage at certain views, many of the fans have come out on here and given their support to the efforts of Bakes and Unders and the squad,in what they're trying to achieve.

That being said, you can never please everyone all of the time.

A forum needs frank discussion, whether deemed positive or negative.

As much as Neil and Jon have been stung by certain criticism aimed at them from certain quarters,I firmly believe they realise that the majority of Slough fans want them to be successful.

However,we must not stop honest opinion, regardless of whether it contains works of fact or fiction.

We all know the rules of this forum,as long as people refrain from personal abuse/over the top insults and remain fair and objective,I don't see the problem with reasonable amounts of criticism in the context of post match analysis.

It appears that Cirencester have drawn AFC Porchester at home in the next round of the cup,who are managed by Graham Rix,no less.

Hi Royston-you sound like a relation or friend to OUR MANAGERS using their nicknames appears to be a clue.Won't you be a bit sick if we improve at your expense promotion wise.

As is usual cup wise we always follow the team that knocked us out ( Slough's fixtures permitting ) so we were at Banbury last Saturday-and I can assure you they were both poor sides-Cirencester just being a bit more lucky!
