There have been a few mentions recently about the site not being updated as frequently as everyone is used to so thought I would give a bit of an explanation and ask everyone to bear with us....

The site is currently going through several transitions towards the oft-mentioned completely new site and each of these are causing complications in their own right.

Firstly, everything is being moved to a new database. This is straightforward for most of the stuff that is in the current database but there are some parts (news items, match reports, previews, certain pages (such as history and the commercial pages) as well as the photo gallery) that do not currently use a database so these are having to be migrated in separately

On top of this, as web languages and browsers develop new coding standards come in, older ones stop being supported. As large chunks of the current site contain code that is now deprecated, these are having to be completely rewritten, often with me having to read up on new code first.

The result of all this is that the backend of the site is currently a mess. An organised mess but a mess.

Simply there are are two different 3rd party scripts that are used for creating and updating  news and pages, another 3rd party script for the photo gallery, there are some parts (mainly match and player related stuff) that has to get entered via the admin area I set up 3/4 years ago, there are a couple of bits that get entered via an admin area I set up about a year ago but then changed my mind about and now the first complete section in the new admin area, which is where everything will go in future. And Paul Z has had the unfortunate task of having to learn most of these in one go.

The fact that the first working part of the new admin area is up and running is a major turning point. As is the fact that there is now something on site powered from the new database (the list of sponsors on the Match Sponsors Page).  Over the next few weeks more and more stuff will be powered by the new database and updated via the new admin area. This will make updating the site a much easier task and also should see a few new features appearing.

I might, in the unlikely event that anyone is interested or has nothing better to do, write a follow-up that gets a bit more technical.....

Funny you should mention those Ian....PHP5, HTML5, CSS3, MySQLi (plain old MySQL is soooooooo 2010), jQuery and a slight smattering of Ajax, cookies that will remember users layout options and dynamic breadcrumbs are all currently being wedged into the mix!!

Let's have a bit of MySQL, PHP & HTML5

You could always toss in a bit of JavaScript, the odd cookie and maybe a breadcrumb or two. :)

There is a thin line between genius and insanity, I think you've rubbed it out chaps. Any biscuits left ?
