Can management please have more respect for the fans

I was most annoyed today, when many people were probably attending their first Margate match, that they were not correctly informed the names of the home players.

The shirt numbers were hopelessly muddled in the stadium announcement. For example, when Kinch scored he was announced (correctly) as number 8, although he had been called out before the game as number 6. Even the website had Hessenthaler and Whitely mixed up.

Honestly, if I was attending for the first time, I would have come away thinking the club doesn't have enough respect for its fans to even bother informing them properly.

I am not blaming the PA, who was probably incorrectly informed himself, but heck, this needs sorting out.

This is a communication issue not a lack of respect. I'm all for constructive criticism but the club does loads for the fans and mixing up shirt numbers is not enough to warrant claiming a lack of respect. It's annoying yes as we're all still putting faces to names and shirt numbers help that, but a lack of respect isn't what I'd use to describe the situation.

The website went by the names on the team sheet. As soon as it was noticed I changed it.

As for squad numbers.......no thanks. That became a mission to maintain last year!!

Excuse me Coffin Ender (someone I very much respect on this forum) and others, I was not moaning about the excellent performance or result. I was there next to people new to the club, whose enjoyment was lessened by not knowing who the players were. If you think that is ok, then fine, we will have to agree to differ.

The teamsheets are produced in the office as soon as we are given copies of the lists handed to the ref. Bearing in mind we are having requests from fans and club (home and away) officials for copies from as early as an hour before kick off, before we get the info, the five minutes we take to type in 32 players names plus the time to run off copies for the PA, sponsors,  boardroom and shop for the fans is not too bad. As much as possible is pretyped ( eg ref and linesmen names although these too have been amended at the last moment at times)

We can only type in the names (spelt based on spelling from the two teams secretaries hand writing) when we have them and if there is a delay in the team selection we sometimes get these sheets as late as 10 minutes before kick off.

On Monday the list said John Beales was number 8. We thought it must be tactical and it is not down to us to query team selection. When the players were about to kick off it was then noticed Scott Kinch was 8 and Beales is usual number at which point there was sod all we could do.

As for squad number, its a nice idea but with players coming and going at this level can cause just as many problems.

Thanks Frankie explains everything.

RE: Squad Numbers....

From my point of view with maintaining the web site, there were two main issues....

When a player signs at short notice and do not get assigned a squad number before they play, I had to make one up otherwise the database got confused.

Quite often they were then assigned a number that had previously been given to another player who had now left. This meant I had to give the ex-player a new fictitious squad number and change that on every appearance they made. I then had to find appearances for the new player and change them to the squad number that was previously assigned to someone else but was now with the new player.

It was an absolute nightmare.

The only way around this would be to not use the same squad number twice in a season but as Joseba said, this would have meant 40 different shirts had to be made during the year.

All a bit of an over reaction I think, yes there were some mistakes with players named and numbers worn and yes it was a bit confusing however I am not sure this has happened before so I will excuse the mistake,
